Tesla Model 3 and Model Y approved in India: Report

Tesla has taken forward the next step in order to bring its electric vehicles to India. The company has achieved homologation certification for its four-vehicle variants. Reports suggest that the American sustainable carmaker will first unveil Model 3 and Model S in the country.

Tesla Car Models Homologation

Tesla has received approval to run its car on the Indian roads since the homologation listing has been cited on Vahan Sewa’s official website. To the readers who don’t know, homologation is a process that involves identifying a vehicle for roadworthiness by matching the requirements set by the Indian government for all vehicles that are made or imported into the country.

While four different Tesla electric cars have been listed, still it is unclear about the specific model the company is intended to bring in first. Though a reliable Twitter source @TeslaClubIN believed it to be two variants each of Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla Operations in India

Tesla has previously registered itself in Bengaluru with the name Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited and is now said to set up its office in Mumbai. The company has started planning its operations in the country. It is looking forward to opening its dealerships in the metro cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

As of now, the American EV carmaker has not revealed whether it will import the car units called completely built units (CBU) to India or prefer the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) method which will require assembling of parts in the country. Nevertheless, the CBU practice will certainly increase the effective prices of Tesla electric cars. And seeing the motor industry in India, the CKD tactic will do more favour.

The Indian Government is expecting an upsurge in the development of electric vehicles in the nation with the arrival of Tesla. Also, to promote the use of advanced chemistry cell batteries, the government is pushing the ‘Make in India’ scheme. Additionally, reports suggest that authority is prepping to subsidize the purchase of electric cars at a mass level.
