Tata Electronics Clears Pollution Complaint At Hosur iPhone Parts Plant, Regulatory Action Dropped

Tata Electronics, Apple’s second-largest supplier in South Asia (after Foxconn), has resolved a pollution complaint against its iPhone component manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the one that makes iPhone’s back panels among other parts.

The state’s pollution control board has confirmed it will take no further regulatory action against the plant.

What Exactly Happened?

On May 25, 2026, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board issued a notice, alleging that wastewater from the facility contaminated groundwater in open wells on the nearby farmlands. The board moves after complaints from farmers.

It also drew reference from five state inspections conducted between December 2025 and May 2026.

How Did Tata Respond To It?

Tata responded by initiating independent testing through an accredited laboratory, followed by results showing it was operating within the regulatory limits.

Tata subsequently told Reuters that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board confirmed the company had satisfactorily addressed all the concerns. Reports also indicate that the board’s own water-sample analysis did not find contamination at the site.

Why Is This Important?

The incident is a reminder of the environmental compliance pressures that accompany India’s rapid rise as an iPhone manufacturing hub. From producing 6% of the global iPhones in 2022, India is on its way to produce 26% of the global iPhones this year.

That’s an over 400% increase in manufacturing capacity over four years. It means that the Indian facilities, like the Hosur plan in question, are operating are significant capacity, and environmental monitors are still catching up.
