On Monday, February 26, 2024, Sony launched the Alpha 9 III camera with the world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor. With the new feature, the camera can shoot burst images at up to 120 frames per second without any distortion or camera blackout. Further, it also features AI autofocus that calculates the AF/AE calculations up to 120 times per second. Further, it also comes with several video-related features. Let’s discuss the camera’s specifications, features, and price in more detail.
Sony Alpha 9 III Specifications
Out of the box, the Alpha 9 III comes with a full-frame stacked Exm or RS CMOS sensor (~ 24.6 MP) with a Global Shutter. Powering the camera is the BIONZ XR image processing engine. Regarding autofocus, it features a 693-point phase-detection AF system with 93 percent sensor coverage and 425 contrast-detection AF points.
The viewfinder on the camera is an OLED screen with 9.44 million dots and 120 frames per second refresh rate. It has a magnification ratio of 0.7x. Users also get a 3.0-inch 1.44 million-dot tilting touchscreen display for viewing the images and browsing through the settings menu. Regarding video recording, the camera can shoot in a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at up to 120 frames per second in the full-frame mode.
The camera’s connectivity and data transferring features include 5GHz Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, 1000BASE-T LAN port, and dual SD card slots for more shooting flexibility. Last but not least, the provided battery lasts up to 760 shots on the OLED viewfinder and up to 870 shots on the touchscreen LCD. The Sony Alpha 9 III’s body weighs 737 grams.
Sony Alpha 9 III Features
Addressing the elephant in the room, the Alpha 9 III comes with the new Global Shutter stacked CMOS sensor (that has built-in memory). As mentioned earlier, photographers can achieve Continuous Shooting Speed (with AF/AE tracking) of up to 120 frames per second. Further, the camera comes with high-density focal plane phase detection AF. The camera features 8.0 stops of optical 5-axis image stabilization.
The camera’s shutter speed ranges from 1/80000 seconds in regular mode to 1/16000 in continuous shooting mode. With a compatible flash module, such as the HVL-F60RM2, photographers can synchronize the flash speeds at up to 1/80000 shutter. Interestingly, the camera comes with a Pre-Capture function that allows users to go back up to one second and capture the moment before they hit the shutter button.
The improved image processing speed allows the Sony Alpha 9 III to capture approximately 390 Fine JPED images in one continuous 30 frames per second burst. On the other hand, the customizable focus areas have been expanded to include from XS to XL. Regarding video recording, the camera is the first in the Alpha series that allows the user to record 4K 120p high-frame-rate videos without cropping into the sensor. In S-Log3 mode, the camera can import and display the user’s preferred LUT.
With support for the Monitor & Control mobile app, faster data transfer speeds, and support for various memory cards, the Sony Alpha 9 III looks like one of the most advanced cameras in its segment.
