Artificial Intelligence is taking over the tech world in both good as well as bad ways. While AI proves to be beneficial in some situations, there are times when it has been questioned for violating the privacy of individuals. Recently, Hollywood Actress Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of using her voice for the new ChatGPT-4o model even after she refused the company’s offer to lend her voice.
She gave a statement to the news outlet Variety claiming she was contacted by Open AI CEO Sam Altman in 2023 to lend her voice to GPT-4o but she declined the offer for personal reasons. When she heard the released demo, she was shocked, angered, and in disbelief about Microsoft using her voice even after her refusal.

While OpenAI claimed that the voice doesn’t belong to Scarlett Johansson, X owner Elon Musk has now made a statement about this ongoing dispute.
On Tuesday, Elon Musk took to X expressing his displeasure with OpenAI about the entire matter. He called out Microsoft Corp and wrote, “Yeah, it’s obviously a ripoff” They were literally bragging about it”, he said referring to the incident where the actress hired legal counsel against OpenAI over using her voice without permission.

The recently launched OpenAI GPT-4o model can reason across audio, vision, and text and the demo version sounds like it is using Scarlett’s voice.
Why does the incident matter?

This open criticism of OpenAI by the actress and Elon Musk is important as it is related to the ongoing debate around AI ethics and intellectual property rights. Usage of Scarlett’s Voice without her permission has sparked legal action thus raising questions about the responsibility of AI makers to respect the privacy of individuals.

While OpenAI claims it is not Scarlett Johansson’s voice but belongs to a different professional actress, the company hasn’t revealed the name of the actress to protect their privacy. Responding to the actress’s statement, Sam Altman told NBC News that Sky aka GPT-4o was not a rip-off of Johansson’s voice. He also claimed that the voice was recorded by a professional actor and the identity of the actor can’t be disclosed due to privacy reasons. “We cast the voice actor behind Sky’s voice before any outreach to Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better,” Altman said.
This incident has also highlighted that the privacy of those in the public eye is always under threat due to AI advancements. Not only voices but fake videos and photos are also being made and circulated of public figures using AI features.
