Apple held its annual developer conference yesterday wherein Tim Cook announced that Apple is partnering with OpenAI and integrating ChatGPT into its iPhones, Macs, and iPads. The company did this as a part of Apple Intelligence which is another name for Apple AI.

The partnership includes integration of ChatGPT powered by GPT-4o across Apple’s software including new and better Siri as well. Apple confirmed that this capability will be available for free without an account in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later in 2024. The company said, “When a user grants permission, Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s broad world knowledge and present an answer directly”.

All this was fine until Elon Musk took to X slamming Apple for making the data of its users accessible to OpenAI. Musk used the microblogging platform to express his disagreement with Apple’s policy of integrating OpenAI at the OS level. He denounced the partnership saying, “If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my company. That is an unacceptable security violation”.

He even threatened to ban Apple devices from all his companies. Denouncing the partnership, he wrote that if Apple moves forward with the OpenAI integration, anyone who visits Musk’s companies will have to store their Apple devices in a Faraday cage, a type of container that can block all electromagnetic transmissions.

Musk feels this partnership is concerning as it shows Apple’s inability to create itself. He wrote, “It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security and privacy! Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They are selling you down the river”.

Although Apple claimed in its announcement that protection layer will be built for users who access ChatGPT through its devices Musk feels it won’t be so. Apple said that device IP addresses are kept private and OpenAI won’t store requests. Users who choose to connect their accounts will be under ChatGPT’s data-use policies, the company claimed. However, it seems like Apple’s claims haven’t satisfied Elon Musk who feels this partnership will expose the data of Apple users to OpenAI completely and users will have no control over how they can keep it safe.

It is not the first time that Musk has had an altercation with OpenAI. In the past as well, Elon Musk had a public feud with Open AI’s CEO Salt Altman wherein he sued the company accusing it of betraying its original mission of being open-sourced and developing AGI for the benefit of humanity. Earlier Musk was a part of OpenAI, which he then left and announced his own rival AI company, xAI, and a ChatGPT rival Grok.

Not only OpenAI, but Elon Musk has also had clashes with Apple’s Tim Cook in the past. These were sorted out when Cook invited Musk to tour Apple HQ in November 2022, but now after almost 2 years, Musk has again stirred the waters by denouncing the OpenAI and Apple partnership. He called it “creepy spyware” and made it clear that all Apple devices will be banned from his companies if the partnership continues.

In such matters, it is often important to hear the other party’s version as well but till the time of writing this article, neither OpenAI nor Apple has made a comment on the issue. Till then let us know what you think about Musk’s claims in the comments section below.

Stay tuned to this space to know how Apple and OpenAI respond to Musk’s accusations.
