Samsung’s New Laptop OLED Panels Hit 1,600 nits, And Lenovo Is Already Shipping Them

Samsung Display has begun mass production of what it claims is the industry’s first laptop OLED panels to achieve VESA’s new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification (1,400 nits in a 10% of the window). For those catching up, it is a standard that requires roughly 40% more peak brightness than its predecessor.

How Did Samsung Achieve That?

The most interesting number is that the panel can hit up to 1,600 nits of local peak brightness. If that claim holds under independent testing, it will make these the brightest laptop OLED panels to enter mass production to date.

The technology behind the leap is a tandem OLED construction, stacking two light-emitting layers rather than the single layer used in traditional OLED panels (like those in smartphones). The second layer not only raises peak brightness but also improves power efficiency (as both work together), color accuracy, and long-term panel lifespan.

It’s not like the panels are a proof of concept, as Lenovo is already shipping its new laptop with the new panel. I’m talking about the Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition with Samsung’s DisplayHDR True Black 1400-certified display. Other manufacturers like Asus, Dell, and MSI are expected to follow with their own models this year. 

How Can The New Display Technology Benefit Laptop Buyers?

For laptop buyers, the practical implication is quite simple. OLED panels usually offer the best contrast and color accuracy available in laptops, but their brightness ceiling, particularly in HDR content, has kept them behind high-end mini-LED displays.

A 1,600-nit tandem OLED panel closes that gap considerably. While retaining OLED’s inherent advantage of true black levels that mini-LED panels cannot replicate. LG Display is reportedly developing a similar tandem OLED technology for laptops.

A certified 1,400-nit standard, with the ability to hit 1,600 nits in peak conditions, fundamentally changes that math.
