Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens up limitless opportunities and no doubt every tech company knows the extent. Samsung is currently the second largest smartphone camera sensor brand after Sony with a market share of 29%. However, it wants to take the advent of AI to outrank the current market leader. It has been developing ‘On-Sensor’ or ‘On-Device AI’ that can detect invisible objects and more.

Samsung Wants to Decrown Sony Using On-Sensor AI

According to the latest report by Business Korea, the South Korean giant Samsung is working on integrating AI into its camera image sensors. It unveiled the third 200MP sensor earlier this year followed by Zoom Anyplace, a technology that lets mobile cameras capture 4K recording of both full-frame and zoom-in parts of the frame simultaneously. It uses AI at the helm to make the capture possible.

However, Samsung wants to ramp up AI features on its camera sensors. It is working on implementing a camera image sensor with an AI chip to process data on the sensor-level instead of routing through the CPU. This could open floodgates to various possibilities. For instance, the South Korean giant is planning to create sensors that could replicate human senses. We have a hunch that Samsung is referring to camera sensors that could go as high as 500 to 600MP similar to a human eye.

Additionally, the roadmap for its AI camera sensors involves capturing invisible things as soon as 2027. We will get to it in a bit.

The camera sensor market saw a dip in terms of sales volume after COVID-19 struck the world. However, as things have improved, the demand for camera sensors has increased exponentially. It is because of demand from diversified fields including but not limited to robotics, self-driving cars, IoT, and extended reality (XR) devices to name a few.

At the System LSI Tech Day 2023 event, Samsung’s LSI President Park Yong-in highlighted the tech giant’s plans to lead the ‘Proactive AI’ era. It includes implementing AI features including generative AI, long-range communication solutions, and high-performance algorithms in various use cases that will power future devices.

SK Hynix, the third leading camera image sensor brand, is working towards closing the gap with Sony along with Samsung. It revealed the On-Sensor AI tech that has the potential to improve image quality, lower latency, and reduce consumption of power. The tech giant is working on features to recognize faces and objects.

Samsung To Make Invisible Visible – What Is It About?

Color Filter on OnePlus 8 Pro With X-Ray Vision

We mentioned how Samsung makes the invisible visible. But what does that mean?

Samsung has an insane camera image sensor roadmap. It wants to extend the sensor’s ability to detect ‘invisible’ by 2027 although there’s no mention of what exactly it means. However, there are some assumptions.

The tech giant could be working on capturing heat energy similar to FLIR thermal cameras. Samsung could be working on tech that makes it easier to capture invisible info without opting for a specialized sensor. For instance, the OnePlus 8 Pro in 2020 arrived with a color filter camera that has X-ray vision albeit it was patched up as it was intruding in privacy.
