Samsung patents a foldable display that overflows across all four edges

0

Samsung has been granted a patent for a new phone screen that has extreme curves folding to all four sides. Samsung earlier filed for the same design with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration and the same has now been included in World Intellectual Property.

Folks at Letsgodigital have published concept designs based on the patent and as you can see in the images, the metal frame now extends to secure the corners that are most susceptible to damage in the event of a fall.

This isn’t the first vehemently curved screen that Samsung has patented. And there are always chances that these patents don’t transition into real-world products.

Are such curves practical?

Samsung was perhaps the first to charm with such curved-edge screens but has gradually, and consistently, toned down those curves in its flagship S-series and Note-series phones. The Galaxy S20 that we last tested has minimal curves.

But even when they are a bit unergonomic, such curves surely are a feast for eyes. This also explains why a certain “waterfall display alliance” has prominent names like Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Xiaomi and TCL associated with it – all pushing their weights to take aggressively folded screens mainstream.
