Reliance Jio Starts LTE-Advanced Trials In Kerala, May Expand To Other Circles Soon

0

Reliance Jio, which has taken Indian telecom sector by storm with its disruptive data and calling plans, is said to be testing LTE-Advanced in Kerala circle and may soon start testing waters pan India. The youngest telecom player in India is deploying carrier aggregation technology to test LTE-A in Kerala. Reportedly, Reliance Jio is aggregating band 3 with band 5 in some parts of Kerala and that’s resulting in peak speeds of more than 50Mbps.

The LTE-A technology is capable of delivering up to 3 times faster speeds than existing 4G LTE, and theoretically, it can touch download speeds of up to 300 Mbps. Telecom operators across the globe deploy carrier aggregation technology to pool spectrum into a bigger chunk in order to attain high transmission speeds.

According to initial reports, Jio is offering consistent 50Mbps speeds with LTE-A in Kerala, which isn’t astonishingly high. In fact, we have managed to attain similar speeds with single LTE band on Jio, but that was during the initial trial phase. The new development could, however, result in consistent high speeds even when a particular bandwidth signal is weak.

Reliance Jio at present holds 2300 MHz and 850 MHz spectrum across India, and for 1800 MHz airwaves it covers 18 out of the total 22 circles. Currently, it is aggregating 1800MHz and 850MHz waves in places (within Kerala) where 2300MHz is weak or missing. In general, 4G networks uses FDD or TDD standard by utilizing airwaves in 1.4/3/5/10/20 MHz. Using this advanced technology, operators can aggregate spectrum from these 5 blocks to create a pool of maximum 100 MHz. Since Reliance Jio has the licence for 2300MHz, 1800MHz and 850 MHz airwaves, it could very well aggregate all three together once smartphone hardware is capable enough.
