Most recently, we got the newly launched POCO X7 5G for review, which takes over as an affordable all-rounder from the POCO X6. While the Pro models in the X series have been about raw performance, the non-Pro model has always focused more on being a well-rounded device. With that in mind, we put the POCO X7 5G to the test for a few days to see how well it holds up.

Among the pros of the Poco X7 5G are its gorgeous screen, capable processor, and massive battery. However, there are a few aspects where the phone could use some improvements. Without any further ado, let’s dive into the Poco X7 5G review.

Poco X7 5G Review: Unboxing

Poco X7 5G unboxing

When it comes to including complimentary accessories in the box, Poco is giving other manufacturers a run for their money. To kick things off, you get a soft silicon case in the box, which isn’t as robust but doesn’t leave the display’s edges unprotected. Then there’s the 45W fast charging adapter, a big relief for budget-conscious buyers who don’t want to spend another thousand bucks or so on a power brick.

Then there’s a good-quality USB-A to USB-C cable, a SIM ejector tool, and a user manual. Moreover, there’s a lot to explore in the Poco X7’s retail box, which makes up for an exciting unboxing experience.

Poco X7 5G Review: Design & Build

Poco X7 5G design

The Poco X7 5G, like other models in the segment, offers an upmarket design and in-hand feel. It measures 162.3 x 74.4 x 8.4 mm and weighs 190 grams, giving it a similar footprint as the Poco X7 Pro 5G.

The phone is available in three colors: Cosmic Silver, Glacier Green, and Poco Yellow. We received the Glacier Green color for review, and without a doubt, the phone looks and feels premium. With curved edges on the back and the front, the phone is comfortable to hold.

Further, the dual-texture back panel and the shiny rings surrounding the camera sensors set the phone apart from its competitors. The texture should also keep the back from gathering scratches over time. However, we didn’t like how the company has emprinted ‘Poco’ on the back panel, as the mascot covers significantly more area than what we’re used to seeing on smartphones.

The placement of buttons, speakers, and microphones remains the usual. While the right frame houses the power and volume buttons, the bottom frame is home to a speaker grille, the USB-C port, the primary microphone, and the SIM tray. At the top, the phone houses the secondary speaker grille, the IR blaster, and what seems to be two microphone cutouts.

Protecting the curved display on the front is Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Usually found on flagship smartphones, the glass makes the screen less prone to scratches and more resistant to drops. You also get a pre-applied screen protector on the phone. On the front, you get a relatively bigger punch-hole notch, along with parallel-symmetrical bezels.

While everything else is sorted, there seems to be some confusion regarding the phone’s IP rating. The box mentions an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, while the official website and Flipkart list it as IP69. However, we’ve come to learn that the IP69 rating hasn’t been certified in India—only in China. Either way, it’s good to see an official IP rating included.

Poco X7 5G Review: Display

In our opinion, the Poco X7 5G’s screen strikes a balance between compact smartphones and huge phablets. The 6.67-inch 12-bit curved AMOLED panel is a treat on the eyes, especially if you’re playing games, watching movies, or just scrolling through social media; it produces vibrant colors. With a resolution of 2,712 x 1,220 pixels (446 ppi) and a local peak brightness of 3,000 nits, the display is crisp and produces vibrant colors.

In fact, the Poco X7 5G has one of the brightest displays in its segment. Some additional features include up to 480Hz touch sampling rate while gaming, TUV certifications for low blue light emission and flicker-free screen, and 1920Hz PWM dimming. Even the always-on feature provides multiple options, from showcasing plain numbers to text-based messages, fun illustrations, or analog clocks.

Though there’s no option to lock the screen at a 120Hz refresh rate, the phone does a great job of adjusting it dynamically (based on the content viewed on the screen), except for a few hiccups here and there.

While using the phone indoors, even with all the lights in the room, there seem to be no issues with visibility, but viewing the phone under direct sunlight isn’t as pleasant (as the global peak brightness maxes out at 1,200 nits). However, we observed this aspect only because the screen provides an exceptional experience indoors.

While viewing the phone at an angle (as our phones aren’t always directly in front of our faces), we noticed that the display near the edge appears darker than the rest of the screen. This occurs due to the shift in the color of white light when viewed from different angles and is more prominent in curved-screen phones (especially at the edge, where the curvature is maximum). The flat screen at the front, though, has excellent viewing angles.

Pocon X7 5G Review: Speakers and Haptics

Poco X7 5G

With the AMOLED screen, you get a stereo speaker setup. It consists of the primary speaker at the bottom of the device and another speaker (which isn’t as loud) at the top. The sound quality is decent but not the best we’ve heard. The loudness is adequate for a smartphone, and so is the clarity.

Regarding haptics, the device accompanies UI navigations with powerful haptics. You also get a subtle yet noticeable haptic feedback while typing. If you want to adjust the level of vibrations, head to Settings > Sound & Vibration and adjust the slider below the haptic feedback level option.

Poco X7 5G: Biometrics and Connectivity

The Poco X7 5G has an under-display optical fingerprint scanner for quick and secure biometric authentication. During our time with the phone, we didn’t face any issues with the optical scanner; it was quite accurate. The scanner’s placement, however, is toward the lower side and might take some getting used to.

Connectivity options on the smartphone include dual 5G SIM slots, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.4, USB OTG, GPS (L1), GLONASS, and BeiDou. In our brief usage, we didn’t face any connectivity issues on the device.

Poco X7 5G Review: Software

Out of the box, the Poco X7 5G runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS 1.0.2, which is based on Android 14. Given that the company has promised three years of software support for the phone, it will only get Android 17, as opposed to Android 18 on the Poco X7 Pro (since it comes with Android 15 pre-installed). Anyway, the phone will get four years of security updates.

  • Android Version: 14 UP1A.231005.007
  • HyperOS Version: 1.0.2.0.UOOINXM

Those who’ve transitioned from MIUI to HyperOS already know how Xiaomi has refined its custom user interface with a cleaner layout for digital elements, improved animations, a simpler quick settings menu (which might look like the Control Center on iOS to some people), and enhanced lock screen customization options (such as customizable always-on display).

The HyperOS 1.0.2 on our Poco X7 5G seems to run well most of the time; animations are more pronounced, RAM management works fine, and the 120Hz refresh rate makes the UI more responsive than before. However, we had to turn off a few features to fine-tune our experience. For instance, we disabled the “Open search after opening App drawer” feature and the “App Suggestions” feature in the App Drawer settings.

On the positive side, you get features like native app lock, dual apps, a three-finger gesture for partial screenshots (where you can select the area of the screen), a Privacy Protection section that showcases all the permissions that apps currently have access to, and the Digital Wellbeing dashboard. You also get plenty of options to set wallpapers or select your favorite themes.

The Poco X7 offers a couple of GenAI features as well, including the Gemini voice assistant, Chat with Gemini (which is an audio-based experience wherein you can talk to the chatbot about a complex topic or brainstorm certain ideas), and the Photomoji feature that converts a picture into an emoji.

In our time with the device, we used the Gemini voice assistant for tasks like setting reminders and alarms, finding the desired settings options without having to type its name in the search bar, and having a few detailed conversations with Gemini through the voice chat feature; everything worked just fine.

One thing remains unsolved, though: the bloatware situation on the Poco X7. After setting up our unit, we had to uninstall numerous apps that we didn’t choose to download in the first place. Although some apps could be useful for certain users (like Netflix or LinkedIn), others are just hogging the available storage space, something Poco should improve with its upcoming smartphones.

Poco X7 5G Review: Performance

Poco X7 5G review performance

Under its shiny exterior, the Poco X7 5G sports the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra chipset with four 2.5GHz performance cores and four 2.0GHz efficient cores. Accompanying the processor is 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

For its price, the Poco X7 5G offers decent performance, enough to enjoy the most popular mobile gaming titles like Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Call of Duty: Mobile, Subway Surfers, etc.

While playing BGMI, we set the graphics at HDR and the frame rate at Ultra, the highest possible combination available. If you dial down the graphics settings to Smooth, you can play the game at an Extreme frame rate, too. We played three back-to-back matches, and the game seemed to run fine (with a couple of frame drops here and there).

Poco X7 5G benchmarks

In day-to-day performance, the phone offers a good multitasking experience. However, we also noticed the phone lagging a couple of times while scrolling, switching between apps using the recent apps section, or while opening the camera and returning back to the home screen. On the bright side, these aren’t major issues and could be solved with a software update.

Regarding synthetic benchmarks, our unit with 256GB of storage could score 582,148 points in the AuTuTu v10 benchmark. While the CPU scores 208354 points, the GPU scores 75,482 points. The memory and UX scored 128262 and 170049 points, respectively.

On the GeekBench 6 CPU performance test, the Poco X7 5G scored 1040/2939 points in the single/multi-core test. In the OpenCL and Vulkan GPU tests, the phone scored 2502 and 2500 points, respectively. We also conducted the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme test on the device, and it scored 846 points on the same (with an average frame rate of 5.07 frames per second).

Moreover, the Dimensity 7300 Ultra performs well for a phone in its price. However, there’s always room for improvement.

Poco X7 5G Review: Cameras

This time, Poco has equipped the non-Pro smartphone with three cameras on the back: a 50MP (f/1.5, OIS) Sony LYT600 primary sensor, an 8MP (f/2.2, 15mm) ultrawide sensor, a 2MP (f/2.4) macro sensor. On the front, you get a 20MP (f/2.2) selfie shooter. While the primary camera can record videos in 4K@30fps, the other cameras are limited to 1080p@60fps.

Main Camera

The Poco X7 5G’s primary camera clicks crisp, vibrant pictures in well-lit environments. Although it tends to oversaturate the colors a bit (times when the source doesn’t directly light the subject), that’s not a deal breaker. In one of the test shots, we placed the sun right behind the subject, but the camera’s decent dynamic range retains enough subject details (the iPhone 16’s photos attached below).

In broad daylight or in rooms with enough light, I didn’t face any issues with focusing, adjusting the exposure, or in general with the Camera app, which has several features like AI Camera, Dynamic Shots, voice shutter, and Motion Tracking Focus. By default, the camera shoots at 12MP, but you can enable the high-resolution mode by swiping to the right, selecting More, and then hitting the ’50MP’ option.

The camera app also provides a 2x lossless zoom option, which crops into the central portion of the 50MP sensor. Giving credit where due, the 2x mode clicks equally sharp pictures as the regular 1x mode (since both are shot at 12MP resolution).

If you zoom in on a subject like a flower, you’ll also get an aesthetic background blur in the picture, which elevates the subject. However, the 2x mode tends to add more contrast and definition to the image, making it look slightly different from the 1x mode (the difference is negligible).

In low-light scenarios, the camera’s night mode — which enhances the exposure and details in the shot — works well. There is a bit of noise in pictures, and the colors aren’t too accurate, but that’s only visible to a reviewer’s eye. A few times, the primary camera struggled to focus on the subject in low-light scenarios, but that shouldn’t bother users on a daily basis.

When it comes to portraits, the camera does an excellent job of separating the subject and applying a background blur. When clicked with the light, the photos came out really good, to the extent that the reviewer’s sister asked for one picture to set as her WhatsApp display image. The only con is that there seems to be no HDR option for portraits, which might be a trouble if you’re shooting against the light.

Ultrawide Camera

The 8MP ultrawide click good pictures in daylight or well-lit rooms, but it lacks the low-light performance of the primary camera. Further, it isn’t as consistent with color and HDR as the primary camera, but even so, it manages to get the job done. Although there isn’t any noticeable barrel distortion, the edges of the images have a softer appearance.

The Poco X7 5G also has a macro camera with a fixed focus range, making capturing pictures a bit difficult as you’d have to find the ideal distance between the subject and the camera to take a shot (which could be tedious). Even otherwise, the macro camera lacks detail and finesse.

Selfie Camera

The 20MP (f/2.2) front camera captures great details (with the beauty mode off). The pictures are clear, have adequate colors, and represent the skin tones fine. While clicking selfies, you can shift from 1x to 0.8x to accommodate more people. Even in the portrait mode, the front camera works well. However, like the primary camera, there’s no HDR option for portrait mode.

Regarding videos, the primary camera does an exceptional job of stabilizing videos. It is also quick at aiming focus from one subject to the other. However, that isn’t the case with the ultrawide or the selfie cameras. The microphones used on the phone do an acceptable job of picking up the audio, but they lack the fullness that we’ve heard on some other phones.

Poco X7 5G Review: Battery Life and Charging

Poco X7 5G charging brick and cable

The Poco X7 5G features a massive 5,500 mAh battery that supports 45W fast wired charging, which can charge the phone to 100% in about an hour. After a complete charge, we took the phone for a spin to click pictures, shoot videos, and conduct benchmarks.

After about two and a half hours of heavy usage and testing, the phone still had 74% of its battery remaining, which is pretty good. One can easily get around eight to 10 hours of screen-on time in day-to-day usage, while the number could come down to six to eight hours with heavy usage.

Review Verdict: Should You Buy the Poco X7 5G?

Smartprix Rating: 7.9/10

Design and Build: 8.0/10

Display & Speakers: 8.5/10

Software: 7.0/10

Haptics: 8.0/10

Biometrics: 8.5/10

Performance: 7.5/10

Cameras: 7.5/10

Battery Life & Charging: 8.5/10

The Poco X7 5G is an upgrade in more ways than one. The 1.5K AMOLED curved screen provides an excellent viewing experience, while the Dimensity 7300 Ultra provides enough sustained performance for prolonged gaming sessions.

Then there’s the primary camera that clicks excellent images in daylight, while a 5,500 mAh battery lasts an entire day of usage. At Rs. 19,999 (without the bank offer), the Poco X7 5G is a decent all-rounder with a few querks here and there.
