Oppo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is reportedly developing its own in-house chipset, which industry experts believe could potentially make the company more self-sufficient and competitive in terms of both performance and pricing. The company has reportedly invested more than $1.4 billion in research and development to create its own SoC. Reports suggest that Oppo has already started working on its chip, and it is expected to hit the market in 2024.

@CellPhoneChipExpert, a reputable Weibo insider, has revealed that Oppo’s first-ever smartphone chipset is in the works, and it is expected to be compatible with 5G networks. The chipset will reportedly be manufactured by TSMC using a 4nm manufacturing process. Industry experts predict that Oppo’s in-house built processor will enter tape out in the second half of 2023, with the final product being released in 2024.

This move could help Oppo maintain its position at the forefront of the industry, especially with the recent silicon shortages. Companies like Google, Apple, and Samsung have already developed their own proprietary chipsets, and as more companies become self-sufficient, the industry could see a shift toward greater independence. Oppo’s previous release of its custom-designed processor, MariSilicon X, which was a specialized 6nm imaging chip, also suggests that the company is not planning to rely on processors and parts made by current partners like MediaTek and Qualcomm. Although Oppo has not yet confirmed the news of its in-house chipset, reports suggest that the announcement will be made soon.
