Oppo has launched its flagship smartphone series for the Indian market Oppo Reno 7 Series. It has two models- Oppo Reno 7 and Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G. These smartphones claim to offer a good camera setup, stylish design, premium build, large battery life, all under one roof, and that too for Rs. 39,000. It has launched in a segment where the competition is neck to neck with brands like Xiaomi (11T Pro), OnePlus (9RT), and more. So, does Oppo Reno 7 Pro deliver what it promises? Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G review: Design

This year companies have started rolling out phones with the glittery backside, changing hues under light calling it light shift or playing with colors, and Oppo has done the same with both Oppo Reno 7 and 7 Pro. Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G comes in Starlight Blue and Startrails Black colors and both come with a shiny back panel that changes shades under the light. The variant we got was the blue one and it did give shades of red under sunlight.

The device has a boxy glass sandwich Aluminium design with a flat front and back and flat edges. Although it has a glittery back panel, the finish is kept matte to reduce smudges and fingerprints. Overall the design looks premium and the feel-in-hand is decent. The front of the smartphone has a 6.5-inch display with very narrow bezels and a selfie camera at the corner.

At its glass back Oppo Reno 7 Pro has a big rectangular camera module with triple camera lenses and an industry-first Orbit Breathing Light strip around the module. This ring glows when you receive calls, messages, or charge your device. It has a single-colored glow. Apart from this, the back panel is bare. The volume rockers and power key are found on either side of the device, while the bottom has a speaker grille, USB C port, and a dual SIM tray.

The top edge has a microphone. There is no headphone jack which is a drawback as many people still use wired earphones. The device weighs 180 grams and thus is lightweight to hold and operate with one hand. It is 7.45mm thick which makes it the slimmest Reno smartphone making one-hand use easier.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G review: Display

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G has a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel which gives colorful and vibrant visuals. The brightness can be adjusted manually so that it doesn’t trouble anyone’s eyes but you can choose auto-brightness too as it works well. It has a 90Hz refresh rate which is next to the class-leading but good enough that most of us will find it smooth and fluid while scrolling. The touch sampling rate is 180Hz which works as the touch is very responsive. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection which is one of the better glass protection available.

The FHD+ display has support for HDR10+ and the company claims it is certified for both Netflix and Prime Video. I watched some content on Netflix and the experience was as good as it gave stunning visuals with immersive sound quality. Under the light, the display is visible but slightly reflective which is also a downer.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G review: Battery

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G has a 4500mAh battery which can last for 1.5 days if you have moderate to light usage. If your daily usage includes playing games, surfing the internet, watching content, attending calls and video calls, and using social media sites, the battery gives a good backup. Long gaming sessions would mean the battery would drain out faster but still would last one day if not more.

It comes with a 65W SuperVOOC fast charger which took around 35 minutes to recharge the battery from 0 to 100%. This means even on days when the battery had drained out to under 10% by dinnertime, I could plug it in and get 100% charge by the time I got ready for bed. Overall the battery and charging experience is good on Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G review: Camera

Oppo is one such brand that always focuses on providing a good camera setup and calls its devices made for photography. This time it is called Oppo Reno 7 Pro as portrait expert but does this claim have any truth? Let’s find out.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G has a triple camera rear setup. It includes a 50MP main Sony IMX766 sensor along with an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro camera. The camera module also has a flashlight and a color temperature sensor. At the front is the 32MP selfie camera.

If we talk about the main 50MP sensor, it gives good images in daylight. They are clear, precise, vibrant, and detailed. The dynamic range is good and the pictures look full of life. At night time too, the main sensor gave good quality images with very less noise and decent clarity.

The 8MP wide-angle lens delivers average results. The images are on the dull side though the FOV is ok. As for the macro lens, it gives very good close-up shots. It works well in night mode as well, which is a huge plus.

The 32MP front camera gives decent clicks but makes sure you turn off the beautification filter which is on by default. The filter makes the images look artificial, so it is better to click selfies without using them if you are someone who wants images to be as real as possible. The selfie camera automatically switches to the wide-angle mode when it detects more people in the frame, which is useful.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro can record up to 4K using the main camera but only at 30fps. If you want to use 60fps, the quality will get down to 1080p. The quality of videos recorded in daylight was very good whereas the low-light videography was strictly ok.

The camera UI shows many other modes and filters that are available for photography. These include extra HD mode, panorama, slow-motion, time-lapse, dual video mode, and more. Otherwise, the camera UI is quite typical with gallery preview, shutter, and selfie camera toggle at the bottom. On top are toggles are flash, HDR, 50MP mode, and 3 dot icon to access the timer, aspect ratio, and more. There are buttons for retouching, filters, and Google Lens on the viewfinder.

Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G review: Performance

The Oppo Reno 7 Pro draws power from MediaTek Dimensity 1200-Max chipset which claims to give an enhanced display, better imaging, and video clarity. It comes in a single 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. 12GB RAM gives fast performance and 256GB storage means lots of storage space for videos, audio, pictures, documents, and more.

The RAM can be expanded by up to 7GB using virtual RAM which means if you feel your processor slowing down, you can fasten it by using virtual RAM. The phone is fast and smooth in day-to-day usage. Dimensity 1200 and 12GB RAM make sure there are no lags or stutters. Apps load and open swiftly and switching between multiple apps is seamless. Never does any app crash or get unresponsive under pressure, even if I was using around 10 to 12 apps at a time.

Gaming was good as games like PUBG ran well even in max settings, but the glass panel of the device does heat up if you are having an intense gaming session. Thermal performance could have been worked upon as heating was also felt while running the CPU throttle test. The area around the camera module specifically does heat up more.

In the software department, Oppo Reno 7 Pro comes with ColorOS 12 based on Android 11. Android 11 is surely a sore point in a smartphone launching in 2022. Color OS 12 makes up for it as it has evolved well.

There is a lot of bloatware (most of the third-party apps) that can be uninstalled as per your needs. Features like Omoji, Anti-peeping notifications, and clone phone 2.0 are also present which work well. Omoji lets you create your digital avatar which is cool and no peeping makes sure no one can see what your notifications are. There is no adware which is a relief.

The audio quality of the Oppo Reno 7 Pro is decent and loud. Good microphones and earpieces make sure audio over calls is good too. Connectivity options include 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and more. There is no IP rating which is a glaring drawback in a flagship device like Oppo Reno 7 Pro. There is no wireless charging as well.

Review Verdict: Should you buy Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G?

The main strong point of Oppo Reno 7 Pro is its camera setup as well as its battery department. The smartphone looks and feels premium, and is available in 2 beautiful colors. Performance-wise, there’s nothing to complain about as the Reno 7 Pro performs well on most counts. There are areas that need improvement like refresh rate, IP rating, Android 11, and lack of headphone jack, but if you are someone who buys a smartphone for a camera, Oppo Reno 7 Pro 5G could be your choice. Otherwise, in this price range of 40k, there is huge competition as many other devices are available like Xiaomi 11T Pro, Samsung Galaxy S20FE, and more.
