Oculus Go, The Most Affordable Standalone VR Headset Goes For Sale: Features and Specifications

0

New Facebook-owned Oculus Go VR headset, that was launched early this year, is now available for sale in the US. The Oculus Go, which is manufactured by Xiaomi, is the third virtual reality headband from the brand, but the first stand-alone one. There is no need for a smartphone or any other component attached to it for a virtual reality experience.

That’s not all, the Oculus Go price starts from $199 (roughly Rs. 13,300), making it the cheapest VR headset in the industry. But is that a reason enough to buy the VR? Let’s dig into Oculus Go specifications and features.

Oculus Go: A Self Contained VR

Most affordable VR headsets require a PC or a smartphone to be paired with them, but Oculus Go doesn’t need any of these. The said VR headset comes with its own LCD display with 2160X1440 pixel resolution and fast-switching technology. It is powered by Snapdragon 821 chipset, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB internal storage.

While some of the specifications might seem a little scarce, Oculus says everything has been optimized for the VR use.

However, the cost cutting does limit the extent of Oculus Go. It has only 3 Degrees Of Freedom, no display slider or scaler, and no positional tracking. The refresh rate of 70Hz is also on the lower side compared to the other VR headsets in the market.

Further, the Oculus Go comes with built-in headphones in the straps – suited for a casual listening experience. But, if you are looking for an immersive experience you can always connect your earphones to the 3.5mm headphone jack. Oculus affirms that the Go battery can last up to 2.5hrs on a single charge.

The VR headset can be controlled from the wireless handheld controller. You can adjust the volume and power on/off the device from the buttons placed on top of the Oculus Go.

All in all, the Oculus Go is a perfect VR headset for two reasons. Firstly, it is standalone VR headset that allows you to use it even if you don’t have a PC, a console or a higher-end smartphone. And, second – it’s cheap. The only VR headset that can give Oculus Go a run for its money is Lenovo’s Mirage Solo but it costs almost Rs. 10,000 more.
