Meta’s Ray-Ban AR Glasses, owned by Facebook, currently holds the title of the most popular smart glasses on the market. They are available in both sunglasses and traditional styles, featuring a digital assistant that responds to audio commands and the capability to capture photos and videos from a first-person viewpoint. The latest iteration of these smart glasses was unveiled in late 2023, indicating that a new generation is expected next year. This time, Meta aims to compete vigorously with Apple’s Vision Pro and Google’s newly introduced XR Glasses by incorporating a display in the upcoming Ray-Ban model.

Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses to get a display
A report from the Financial Times indicates that the glasses will feature a completely new display by 2025. Currently, Ray-Ban glasses do not provide any visual output for the user. Instead, wearers can only receive audio responses from a digital assistant and access information from their connected devices, as there is no capability to display content. The development of the display aims to address this existing limitation.
The report also indicates that the display will primarily feature basic elements such as text, navigation directions, and notifications from connected devices, among other functionalities. Currently, it will not support video feeds or high-quality images.
Meta is said to be incorporating a display into its sunglasses, priced at $300 (over Rs. 25,000), developed in collaboration with eyewear producer EssilorLuxottica.
The upcoming Ray-Ban smart glasses featuring a display are anticipated to be released in the latter half of 2025. This display is designed to enhance the user experience significantly and will enable Meta to better compete with competitors such as Apple Vision Pro and Google’s XR Glasses.

The speculation regarding Ray-Ban glasses featuring a display arose shortly after Google unveiled Android XR, a new operating system tailored for XR devices. The company has also indicated that it will introduce Android XR Glasses in 2025. While these glasses have yet to receive a commercial name, they are expected to pose significant competition to Ray-Ban’s smart glasses. In a similar vein, Apple is also developing glasses that will incorporate a display. If Meta fails to integrate a display in the third generation of Ray-Ban glasses, it risks falling behind, as both Google and Apple are set to release glasses or headsets equipped with displays.
Meta offers multiple generations of Ray-Ban glasses, giving it a competitive edge over Google. However, it appears that 2025 will witness intense competition in the AR glasses market.
