LG mobile division, for a very long time, has been in need of a winner. The brand brought out its V60 ThinQ in February and the response wasn’t anything but lukewarm. Then, we heard that it’s discontinuing its ‘G-series’ of flagship phones and in place introduce something new. Well, that new has an official name now – LG Velvet.

LG has announced the arrival of Velvet, first-in-line of a new product roadmap. These upcoming phones will focus on form and design dynamics. Thus, it will be a divergence from the cookie-cutter designs of contemporary phones. LG’s own roster shares a bulk of this blame. But, the teaser and renders of the LG Velvet seem promising (Source: @iceuniverse).

LG Velvet’s deviant design

The name “velvet” is intended to elicit a feeling of lustrous smoothness and premium softness. Well, that claim can be verified after a hands-on experience only. Nonetheless, it’s a distinct deviation from the alphanumerical denominations. And LG expects to relate nomenclature with its buyer’s personality.

Velvet sports a “Raindrop” camera arrangement at the back as seen in the image above. This looks refreshing from the big bumpy panels on the Galaxy S20 (review) series, Huawei P40 series and iPhone 11 series. You can also see the phone’s “3D arc design” with curved glass on the face and base.

“Our new branding reflects current trends of addressing the unique personal tastes and emotions of the individual with a greater emphasis on design,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president of product strategy at LG Mobile Communications Company. “It’s a more intuitive approach that we are confident will resonate with today’s consumers and help us to establish a clearer brand identity.”

Although LG has been quiet about the specs, features and launch details, we have managed to gather some scoop from the web. A South-Korean news outlet Naver has reported the LG Velvet’s debut to be on May 15. The rumor has it that with the new design, LG will look to recreate the magic of its Chocolate series. Something else we have learned is that the Velvet might ship with mid-range specs, including Snapdragon 765 SoC. All this is still unverified by the company and as such, it’s better to consume with a grain of salt.
