In a significant development aimed at propelling India’s presence in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Jio Platforms, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, has announced a strategic collaboration with chipmaker Nvidia. The partnership seeks to construct a cutting-edge cloud-based AI compute infrastructure.

The newly proposed AI cloud infrastructure aims to provide a robust ecosystem for researchers, developers, startups, scientists, and AI practitioners across India. Through this partnership, they will gain access to accelerated computing and high-speed, secure cloud networking to facilitate the efficient execution of AI workloads.

Jio Platforms released a statement asserting that the collaboration with Nvidia will usher in an era of innovation and progress. “The new AI cloud infrastructure will enable researchers, developers, startups, scientists, AI practitioners, and others across India to access accelerated computing and high-speed, secure cloud networking to run workloads safely and with extreme energy efficiency,” Jio Platforms stated.

Nvidia, a global leader in AI technologies, expressed its commitment to work hand-in-hand with Jio Platforms to create AI infrastructure of unparalleled power. The joint effort aims to outpace the capabilities of India’s most powerful supercomputers. Nvidia will provide access to its cutting-edge Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and Nvidia DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputing service hosted in the cloud.

The AI infrastructure, which is set to be hosted in AI-ready computing data centers, is expected to expand to an impressive 2,000 MW capacity. The execution and implementation of this ambitious project will be overseen by Jio Platforms.

Under the terms of this collaboration, Nvidia will supply Jio with comprehensive AI supercomputer technologies, encompassing CPU, GPU, networking, and AI operating systems and frameworks for constructing advanced AI models. Jio Platforms, in turn, will take charge of the AI cloud infrastructure’s management and maintenance while also handling customer engagement and access.

Jio Platforms has highlighted that this state-of-the-art infrastructure will expedite a wide range of India’s vital initiatives and AI projects. These include the development of AI chatbots, drug discovery, climate research, and various other pioneering AI applications that hold the potential to drive transformative changes in multiple sectors.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang’s recent visit to India, underscoring the significance of India’s growing role in the global AI arena. The partnership between Jio Platforms and Nvidia is poised to significantly contribute to India’s ambitions of becoming a leading player in the AI domain.

As India gears up to embrace the era of artificial intelligence, this collaboration promises to bring exciting advancements and opportunities to the country’s tech and research communities. The new AI cloud infrastructure is expected to become a key enabler for India’s journey towards AI-driven innovation and excellence on the global stage.
