Reliance-owned Jio Cinema Application proved to be a boon to the T20 Lovers in India when it announced Free streaming of all IPL 2023 matches that too in over 11 languages with different camera angles and 4K quality. The effect could be seen in the viewership as the platform broke all records of viewership. Along with IPL 2023, the Jio Cinema App also provided free streaming of all shows and movies.

However, this is all set to change soon as Jio will enter the OTT Arena to compete with giants like Netflix India, Amazon Prime, and Disney+Hotstar. During a recent event held by Jio Studios, Jyoti Deshpande announced adding over 100 new movies and web series to its platform in 2023-24. This would mean Jio Cinema becoming a paid platform.

Jio Cinema to Become a Paid App

Jyoti Deshpande, the media and content business President at Jio, said in an interview with Bloomberg that Jio Cinema will add over 100 movies and web series to expand its offerings and take on the competition. However, viewers will soon have to pay for the content as the platform will start charging post-IPL 2023 ends on May 28, 2023.

Although the exact paying structure is not finalized yet, the move will boost the company’s revenue and establish its position in the competitive Indian streaming industry.

Pricing of new plans

The new content will be made available before IPL 2023 ends but IPL matches will stream for free. Jio plans to bridge the gap between Indian and Western content and become a catalyst for the cross-pollination of talent.

The Platform plans to keep pricing simple for viewers to make it accessible for all. It is possible that Jio might offer cost-effective plans to its users so that they can afford them easily.

Jio Cricket Plans

Along with free streaming of IPL 2023, Jio has added Cricket plans that offer 3GB data per day along with additional data add-on packs and special vouchers. The cricket add-on packs were launched to benefit users who wanted to live-stream matches without worrying about data. 3 cricket add-on packs were launched, priced at Rs. 222, Rs. 444, and Rs. 667.

Jio Cinema’s plans to charge for its original content after IPL 2023 will be a strategic move to expand beyond cricket broadcasts and give stiff competition to other OTT Giants like Netflix and Amazon. Jio will keep tariffs simple but will definitely become a major player in the Indian streaming industry.
