iPhone 18 Could Bring 12GB RAM Without a Price Hike, Despite Rising Memory Costs

TL; DR (tap to expand)
  • The standard iPhone 18 is once again rumored to feature 12GB of RAM, bringing the entire iPhone 18 lineup to the same memory configuration.
  • Apple is reportedly planning to keep the iPhone 18’s pricing unchanged even as memory costs continue to rise.
  • The regular iPhone 18 is expected to launch in spring 2027 alongside the iPhone 18e and possibly the iPhone Air 2, while the Pro models arrive this September.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 is back in the spotlight, and the latest reports paint a fairly interesting picture of what the company is trying to achieve with its next generation of iPhones.

For starters, the standard iPhone 18 is once again being tipped to receive 12GB of RAM. That might not sound huge on paper, but it would be a sizeable jump from the 8GB found on the iPhone 17 (review). More importantly, it means Apple could finally bring memory parity across its flagship lineup instead of reserving higher RAM capacities for select models.

At WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed that some of its most advanced Siri experiences require at least 12GB of memory. Features such as the new expressive Siri voices and improved system-wide dictation won’t run at their full capability on devices with less RAM. The iPhone 17 series is therefore expected to miss out on those enhancements despite supporting Apple Intelligence more broadly.

No Price Hike Expected for iPhone 18

Reports suggest the company is willing to absorb the rising cost of memory to avoid increasing the phone’s starting price in the US. That’s surprising because memory prices have surged over the past year and have become some of the most expensive components inside a smartphone. Many manufacturers have already been forced to pass those increases on to consumers.

The pricing story may look different outside the US, though. Apple has historically adjusted prices on a market-by-market basis. In India, for example, the iPhone 17 launched at ₹82,900, up from the ₹79,900 starting price of the iPhone 16 (review). So even if the US market sees no increase, that doesn’t automatically mean Indian buyers will get the same outcome.

iPhone 18 Expected Next Year

There’s also the question of timing. The standard iPhone 18 isn’t expected to launch alongside the Pro models. Instead, Apple is reportedly splitting its release schedule. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the rumored iPhone Ultra are still expected to debut this September. The regular iPhone 18 could follow in spring 2027, joined by the iPhone 18e and potentially a second-generation iPhone Air.

That staggered approach may also explain why Apple is comfortable bringing 12GB of RAM to the entire lineup. It gives the company more time to secure supply, manage costs, and ensure that all of its mainstream models are ready for the next wave of Apple Intelligence features.

If these reports hold up, buyers waiting for the standard iPhone 18 won’t simply be getting a later launch. They’ll be getting an iPhone built on the same AI foundation as Apple’s most expensive models. What do you think of this change? Let us know in the comments section below.
