While it might have been a tedious task a few years ago, separating subjects from images has become really easy, especially if you have an iPhone. With iOS 16 and later, iPhone owners can pick up subjects from an image and paste it into other apps. Interestingly, the feature works flawlessly, especially while picking up the borders of a subject. So, whether you want to transform a friend’s embarrassing picture into a sticker or get a cutout for editing/designing purposes, here’s how you can separate the subject from an image on your iPhone.

Separate Subjects From Images Using This Nifty iPhone Trick
As mentioned earlier, this trick will only work on iPhones running iOS 16 or iOS 17 (and the upcoming versions). Those using an older version would have to update their iPhone, or it won’t work. Further, the feature works with any image in your iPhone’s gallery; it doesn’t have to be clicked from an iPhone.
That said, follow the steps given below on the Photos app on your iPhone.
- In the Photos app, select a picture whose subject you wish to separate from the background. Usually, pictures with a clear view of the subject, such as a person, an animal, a flower, or an evident object, work the best.
- Press and hold on the subject until the phone provides haptic feedback. You’ll see a white wave-like animation spread across the selection area, following which a dynamic border begins encircling the selection.
- Following this, you’ll see three options appear at the top of the selected area, including “Copy,” “Add Sticker,” and “Share.”
- Press copy if you wish to paste the selected area as an image (in PNG format, with a transparent background) virtually anywhere you can use the clipboard to paste items, like Notes. If you paste the image into apps like WhatsApp, the app will turn it into a sticker.
- If you wish to create a sticker out of the selection, tap on “Add Sticker.” Within a second, iOS adds the selection as a sticker to its native keyboard app. You can press and hold on to the sticker to rearrange it or add effects.
- However, if you tap on “Share,” you’ll get the option to send it to an AirDrop-supported device on a third-party app, save it as an image in your iPhone’s gallery, assign it to a contact, or save the image in the Files app.

If the selection animation doesn’t appear, you can try holding a different part of the image. However, if nothing happens in a couple of attempts, you might have to try the feature with a different image.
