In the latest version of Chrome, Google introduced a design change that got quite confusing for many users. Google has moved the download tray from the bottom of the screen to the right side of the address bar. Just like Microsoft Edge, the download icon has an animated ring that shows the progress with the button automatically disappearing after it is finished.

This update is sure to give the browser a much neater look when downloading content but it comes with its own share of issues. While some liked the change, many were confused and wondering where the bottom download tray went. Some just miss the legacy download experience that Chrome offers on desktops. So, If you too are in the same boat and want to bring back the old tray, there is a trick that lets you move back the downloads bar to the bottom.

How Does the New Chrome Download Section Look Like

Currently, whenever you download a file in Chrome, the download status pops up next to the address bar in a drop-down menu UI with a download icon. You can click on this icon to view your current download status which shows individual progress bars.

How to Get the Old Chrome Download Notification Bottom Shelf Back

If you are not a big fan of the new download UI, you can go back to the clunky, space-hogging download notification UI at the bottom of the screen. To do this we need to use Chrome Flags and follow the steps below.

  • Go to the chrome://flags page in your Chrome browser.
  • Search for the “Enable download bubble” flag which is set to default.
  • Click on the drop-down menu next to this flag and set it to “Disabled”
  • You will be greeted with a prompt, “Your changes will take effect the next time you relaunch Chrome.”
  • Click on “Relaunch” at the bottom of the screen to successfully restore the bottom download notification in Chrome.
  • After you do this, whenever you download a file in Google Chrome, you will get the same old download notification UI at the bottom of your screen.

If you are someone who is fond of neat UI and spacious workspace, then save some precious space by sticking with the new Chrome Download UI. Along with downloads, there are other Chrome flags as well which help in making the experience better.

Just keep this thing in mind that these flags are purely experimental and Google might remove them anytime in the future, so it would be better if you try and get used to this new download menu.
