TL; DR
  • Gemini Intelligence builds bespoke micro-apps from user descriptions, replacing static, developer-designed widgets.
  • These widgets unify data from multiple sources, like calendars and smart homes, into one interface.
  • Debuting on flagship devices, “vibe-coding” allows the OS to dynamically evolve for user needs.

At the Android Show 2026, Google announced something that wasn’t on my radar: a Create My Widget feature that’s essentially the company’s take on vibe-coding. Alongside Gemini Intelligence, Googlebook, and all the new features for Android 17, the company also released the ability to create your own widget by describing it in your own words.

What Is Google’s Create My Widget?

Traditionally, widgets are created by developers, using lines of complex code, which might have to access information from one or multiple apps and show it to the user on the home screen. This is also why Android phones ship with a limited number of widgets, whether it’s a specific weather layout or a pre-defined calendar view.

However, Google’s new Create My Widget feature allows you to build functional widgets from scratch using generative AI. All you have to do is describe them using natural language, which is essentially what we call “vibe coding” these days.

For example, you could tell Gemini: “Create a widget that shows my next three meetings, the current temperature in Lucknow, and a quick-toggle for my office smart lights.” Within seconds, Gemini generates a bespoke, live widget that fits those exact parameters.

But Don’t Phones Already Ship With Several Widgets?

Yes, but they’re not custom-made for your requirements. For instance, the regular weather widget might show you the maximum and minimum temperatures of a day, along with a description of the weather. However, you can create your own widget that shows you the wind speed and the chances of rain for when you want to go biking.

Availability And Device Support

The rollout for Create My Widget begins this summer, between June and August, as an exclusive feature for flagship smartphones from Google (the Pixel lineup) and Samsung (the Galaxy S26 lineup). It should be a part of the Android 17 operating system update.

Google also confirmed that this functionality will extend to Wear OS, Android Auto, and Googlebook laptops later in the year.

Given that Google is already on its way to developing an AI-infused user interface that replaces the need for operating systems that require manual intervention, the release of custom, vibe-coded widgets sounds like a step toward generative user interfaces, though it’s a very tiny step.
