The gaming community witnessed the unveiling of Stadia, Google’s cloud gaming service at Gaming Developers Conference in San Francisco. With Stadia, you could leverage Google data centers and hardware infrastructure to Stream games to your PC, tablet, TV, or phone.

For instance, you’re watching a game’s official trailer online and at the end, a Play Now option hovers on screen. Tap on it to play the game on the cloud. Via Stadia, you could stream the same game to the Chrome browser, Chromecast, and Pixel devices. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was the one to introduced Stadia on the GDC stage.

Google Stadia: Why should you be excited?

So, for one, as aforementioned, you could play games within the Chrome browser, without a need to downloading or installing the full game. And as for latency, Google claims Stadia could support up to 4K at 60 fps over an internet connection with approximately 25Mbps of bandwidth, and it’s planning to support up to 8K resolutions and 120 fps in the future.

Ubisoft’s acclaimed title, Assassin’s Creed Odessey was primarily used in the public testing that finished in January. However, Doom Eternal would be the first game to launch on Stadia platform. The game awaiting its official launch date would support 4K resolution, HDR, and 60 fps gameplay.

Now coming to the specs, Google is using a tailor-made AMD GPU for its data centers. Google claims the chip will deliver 10.7 teraflops of power, which is more than the combined processing might of PS4 Pro (4.2 teraflops) and Xbox One X(6 teraflops). Each Stadia instance will also be running on a custom 2.7GHz x86 processor with 16GB of RAM.

Google showcased its upcoming Stadia Controller that is custom made for optimum utilization of this game streaming service. You could connect it directly through Wi-Fi to link it to a game session in the cloud. Furthermore, you could switch between connected devices.

This would open up an avenue for YouTube creators to create game clips on the service. Gamers could share gaming instances straight to youtube and with fellow gamers using a feature called State Share. If you are a streamer of games on youtube, now you could play and match up alongside creators using Crowd Play feature. Stadia boasts full cross-platform multiplayer gaming and your progress would be saved up online.

Google Stadia: When would it launch?

Google has partnered with many Developers and Gaming studios to come up with exclusive titles for the Stadia platform. Furthermore, Google hinted at their oncoming Stadia game studio for Stadia-exclusive titles, Stadia Games and Entertainment. It would use Unreal and Unity gaming engines to fire up the games.

Google conveniently left the mode of monetization. We could presume the sources to be advertisements, subscriptions, etc. Google hasn’t declared the date but it would be a reality sometime in 2019 in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe.

Only time could tell, how it fares against the competition from Microsoft’s xCloud and other similar ventures by Valve, Sony, Nvidia, and Amazon.
