TL; DR
  • DigiPIN gives every 4x4m spot in India a unique code.
  • It’s free, open, works offline, and doesn’t need your personal information except the location.
  • It’s not a replacement for PIN codes, but a compliment.

India’s traditional 6-digit PIN system has been around for decades. But it was never built for pinpoint accuracy, especially not in remote or rural areas. That’s where DigiPIN comes in. Developed by India Post with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC, DigiPIN is a digital address system designed to locate exactly where you are. And it’s live now in beta.

What is DigiPIN?

DigiPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) gives every 4×4 meter square in India its own 10-character alphanumeric code. That includes cities, villages, hills, slums, even coastal and forest areas. It’s like a digital address based on your exact GPS location.

It’s not a replacement for your current PIN code. It works alongside it. But while PIN codes point to an area, DigiPIN points to a single spot.

How DigiPIN Works?

DigiPIN

India is split into a massive grid of 4×4 meter blocks. Each block gets a unique code generated from latitude and longitude (using WGS84 standard). This means you can be anywhere—your house, rooftop, farm, or shop—and still have a fixed location identity.

It works offline too. Once your DigiPIN is generated, you can share it without needing the internet. It also doesn’t collect personal data, so your privacy is protected, at least that’s what they say.

How to Use DigiPIN?

  1. Go to https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home
  2. Allow location access.
  3. Note your 10-character DigiPIN.
  4. Save and share it as needed.

You can also enter GPS coordinates manually if you know them.

What Can You Use It For?

  • Share your exact location with delivery agents (Amazon, Flipkart etc.)
  • Help ambulances or fire services reach you quicker.
  • Add to GIS platforms, navigation tools, or address forms.
  • Simplify home deliveries in hard-to-map areas.

If you paste a DigiPIN into the portal or a compatible platform, it will decode it right back into a map location.

Is DigiPIN the Future?

DigiPIN

India has millions of people living without structured addresses. DigiPIN fixes that. It brings accuracy, accessibility, and speed to both personal and business use cases.

  • Helps rural users and areas without formal addresses.
  • Improves last-mile delivery and e-commerce.
  • Reduces confusion in crowded localities.
  • Useful for disaster response and emergency services.

It’s still in beta, so India Post is taking feedback. But the future is big: DigiPIN may get linked to UPI, Aadhaar, e-governance, and smart city records. And since it’s open-source (on GitHub), developers can freely integrate it into their own platforms.
