TL;DR
  • Apple WWDC 2025 starts tonight.
  • iOS 26 is expected to get a major design overhaul.
  • Other expected updates are iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26 & more.

The Cupertino-based technology giant, Apple, is poised to commence its annual developers conference this evening. The Apple WWDC 2025 is scheduled to start at 10:30 PM IST, featuring a keynote address by Tim Cook. Although this year’s WWDC has generated a mix of anticipation, primarily due to the expectation of only significant software updates and the unlikelihood of new hardware, Apple has remained tight-lipped, suggesting that the company may have some surprises in store. In the meantime, let’s discuss what Apple could potentially unveil regarding the design of iOS 26.

iOS 26: Liquid Glass UI Elements

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, iOS 26 is set to introduce a new interface known as liquid glass, featuring design elements that reflect this name across the user interface. This shift will mark a departure from the existing flat design, paving the way for a significant redesign of the iPhone 19 series.

iOS 26 will feature visual components that exhibit a glossy finish and a transparent design reminiscent of a glass surface. The effects of transparency and gloss may be observed throughout toolbars, in-app interfaces, and various controls on the iPhone. This redesign of the operating system is in preparation for a significant number of changes that the company plans to implement in its iPhone series by 2026. Apple will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, as the 2027 model is envisioned as an all-glass concept with curved edges that envelop the device. This model is referred to as ‘Glasswing’.

The new Liquid Glass UI could serve as a way for Apple to save face, as the company is falling behind in the development and launch of its anticipated AI features. Apple has not yet released the complete functionalities of Apple Intelligence that were showcased at last year’s WWDC 2024. Therefore, WWDC 2025 may offer minimal assistance in accelerating AI development and is primarily aimed at enhancing the capabilities and aesthetics of iOS.

The theme of this year’s WWDC 2025 is ‘Liquid Glass’, and this new interface will be the biggest visual change since iOS 7, so expectations are high.
