In a first-of-its-kind project, the London-based tech brand Nothing is inviting its community members to co-develop a custom Phone (2a). The Smartphone Co-Creation Initiative allows “creatives the chance to bring their ideas to life across hardware design, smartphone wallpapers, packaging, and marketing.” As part of the project, enthusiasts and fans can collaborate on four, eventually developing a Phone (2a) Community Edition.
What Does The Smartphone Co-Creation Initiative Consists Of?
“Six months, four stages, and one phone – across this time frame, Nothing will collect entries for the design of the ultimate version of Phone (2a),” the company mentions in its official press release. It adds that “winners at each stage will have the chance to collaborate directly with the Nothing Team as they bring their creations to life.” In the YouTube video announcing this project, the brand says that it believes in the design talent and enthusiasm of the community and would like to develop a smartphone that represents its voice.
The Initiative Will Include Four Stages
The Stage 1 of the Nothing Smartphone Co-Creation Initiative commences on March 26, 2024. Users can head to the official login page and submit their designs, including videos, images, rough sketches, or just textual descriptions that draw an elaborate picture of how they want their Nothing Phone (2a) to look. Given that the brand likes to play with the rear panel’s design, we expect the Community Edition version to take it to the next level. Following Stage 1, Nothing will begin with Stage 2, including wallpaper design. The winning design from Stage 2 will be featured on the official Phone (2a) Community Edition.
The third and fourth stages of the initiative begin in June and July. They will include packaging and marketing campaign design, respectively. “Ideate and submit a creative proposal for the marketing of Phone (2a) Community Edition,” reads the official press release. When a stage opens, the company will share a brief detailing all the rules and guidelines for participating in the co-creation initiative, along with some helpful tips to make a successful entry. Once the entry period closes, the company will conduct polls on its community platforms, where all valid submissions will compete against each other via external voting and internal judging.
Finally, team Nothing will host the winners in London to launch the Phone (2a) Community Edition, which will include all the winning ideas.
