TL; DR
  • Apple’s foldable iPhone will use two layers of ultra-thin glass to reduce creasing.
  • The dual-layer design spreads stress across layers, improving durability over single-glass rivals.
  • The device launches in late 2026, priced between $2,000 and $2,500.

Apple’s long-awaited foldable iPhones could take a fundamentally different approach to one of the foldable industry’s biggest problems: the crease. According to Digital Chat Station, the renowned Chinese tipster, the iPhone Fold could feature two layers of ultra-thin flexible glass (UFG), with the display sandwiched between them.

Spreading The Stress

This would isolate the display from direct contact with the hinge. The arrangement would spread mechanical stress across multiple layers rather than concentrating it on a single sheet, potentially improving durability and reducing visible creasing over time. Current foldables typically use a single UTG layer that must simultaneously handle bending forces and protect the display underneath.

The company has been testing next-generation UFS with variable thickness for a while now. It could use a thinner layer toward the top of the screen, the part that faces you, and a thicker layer at the bottom for added rigidity. Moreover, the new leak suggests that the idea has now evolved into a full composite glass stack rather than a single panel.

What Else We Know

The foldable iPhone, previously expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September 2026, could now ship closer to December. This could give the Pro models a two-month window to be picked up from the shelves and generate worthwhile revenue for the company.

Meanwhile, giving the audience a glimpse of the foldable iPhone at the iPhone 18 Pro event, with the “shipping this December” tagline, could do wonders for the foldable’s hype.

Anyway, the device is expected to feature an approximately 5.3- to 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen, with liquid metal hinges. It could be priced between $2,000 and $2,500 — making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever. Whether the dual-glass approach fully eliminates the crease remains to be seen.
