Apple has reportedly halted its efforts to make the Apple Watch and Health app compatible with Android devices. The project, codenamed “Project Fennel,” was reportedly abandoned as it neared completion, according to Bloomberg. This strategic move aligns with Apple’s approach to safeguard its ecosystem and maintaining product interdependence.

A source familiar with the decision explained to Bloomberg that allowing the Apple Watch to work with Android would have diluted the watch’s value to iPhone users.

There might not be an Apple Watch Ultra 3 Next Year

The decision to discontinue “Project Fennel” underscores Apple’s commitment to its ecosystem and the strategy of offering exclusive features to iPhone users. While extending compatibility to Android would have expanded Apple’s health services to a broader global audience, particularly in markets where Android devices dominate, Apple seems determined to keep its devices closely integrated with each other.

This isn’t the first time Apple has opted not to extend its services to Android. Documents from the 2020 lawsuit by Epic Games against Apple revealed that the company had decided as early as 2013 not to develop an Android version of iMessage.

As Apple continues to prioritize the exclusivity and interconnectivity of its products and services, Android users may need to explore alternative health and smartwatch options. The move reflects Apple’s commitment to maintaining its distinct ecosystem and enhancing the experience for iPhone users.
