Apple Bans Cryptocurrency Mining Apps On iPhones and iPads

0

Apple has banned apps from mining cryptocurrencies on iPhones and other iOS devices, “unless the processing is performed off device.”

“Apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining,” the guidelines further state.

The concern for battery life and performance hit is apparently the reason for the ban.

Apart from shady ads and apps that hijack CPU cycles to mine cryptocurrencies, Apple is also pulling the plug on legit crypto mining apps that users download on their phones in full knowledge. The new guidelines also prohibit cryptocurrency related apps from offering “currency for completing tasks, such as downloading other apps, encouraging other users to download, posting to social networks.”

Apple isn’t the only one with a strict outlook towards cryptocurrencies and the scammy behavior associated with them. In light of increasing cryptocurrency malware, Google and Facebook have already banned Cryptocurrency ads.

Singular iPhones, or all phones for that matter, don’t make for competent mining devices anyways.  Many users probably aren’t even aware that the great demand they put on battery and CPU could be damaging in the long run.

The new guidelines will prevent the practice of any malware pooling resources from thousands of iPhones or iPads for mining and thus make sense. We may also see similar policies on the Android side of things. Google updates its user policies on monthly basis and it’s quite possible that the company might take a similar stance.
