Airtel subscribers across India experienced a sudden service disruption on Monday afternoon, causing widespread issues for users attempting to make calls or access mobile data. Initial reports from outage tracker Downdetector indicated a surge in complaints around 3:30 PM IST, with over 3,600 incidents logged by the evening.

What’s affected

Downdetector data shows that 71% of users reported issues with calls, 15% with mobile internet, and another 14% complained of having no signal at all. The exact regions or circles hit by the disruption remain unclear, but reports have poured in from Delhi and other metro cities.

Users vent on X

Frustrated subscribers flooded X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences.

  • “Is Airtel Network down in Delhi? Since 1 hour, I am facing calling issue, incoming and outgoing both,” wrote one user.
  • “Services are completely down. Unable to make or receive calls and even messages are not working. This is causing serious inconvenience,” posted another.
  • “No network, not receiving any OTPs in Delhi, when will you rectify this?” asked a third.

Airtel responds

Airtel Cares, the operator’s official support handle, acknowledged the outage in a post on X, saying:

“We are currently experiencing a network outage. Our team is actively working to resolve the issue and restore services promptly. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

At the time of writing, Airtel has not provided details on the cause of the disruption or an estimated time for full restoration.

Customers are suffering

With over 375 million subscribers, Airtel is India’s second-largest telecom operator. Even a few hours of downtime can disrupt business transactions, digital payments, and daily communications, particularly in cities where users rely heavily on mobile data and OTP-based authentication.

We’ll update this story as Airtel issues an official clarification or restoration timeline.
