The release of the latest flagship smartphone, the Mi 6, from Xiaomi’s stable firmly drives home the fact that the Chinese smartphone maker is rapidly marching towards the top of the handset spectrum.

The phone, a successor to the immensely popular Mi 5, has been a hot topic since the last couple of months and yesterday’s launch has only added fuel to the fire. Boasting of specs rivaling Apple’s elite iPhones (at least on paper, watch this space for an actual review), the Mi 6 is, in fact, the cheapest Snapdragon 835 there is.

Prima facie, this is how the phone fares up:

3D curved glass design

Xiaomi’s latest offering comes wrapped around a stainless steel exoskeleton and has a high-gloss outline.

Along with that, it has well-rounded corners in contradiction to the curved ones that the Mi 5 had. Xiaomi credits this to the use of ‘four-sided’ curved 3D glass, that also lends it an exquisite look.

Dual Rear Cameras

The Mi 6 is also the first from Xiaomi’s stock to feature a dual camera setup (wide-angle + telephoto lens as opposed to a RGB and monochrome team-up) at the back (rather common these days, though).

The combination is similarly to that which is featured in the much more expensive iPhone 7 Plus, thereby lending some (unwanted?) credibility to the company’s oft-used moniker of being a ‘Chinese Apple’.

Xiaomi has also topped its camera game, though with features like the bokeh effect in portrait mode and a zoom effect with varying focal lengths tend to be pretty reminiscent of Apple’s star-cast.

Invisible fingerprint sensor

Is it there? Is it not?

At your first glance of the phone, you’re sure to ask this question about the Mi 6’s fingerprint sensor. Once and for all, yes it is there.

The company has opted to slide the fingerprint reader beneath the layer of glass encompassing it, in a bid to protect it from regular wear and tear. The Mi 5s also has the same through the use of ultrasonic technology.

Splash resistant

Though it comes without a certification declaring it to be waterproof, Xiaomi’s has been pushing across vehemently the fact that thaeir latest device is splash resistant from all angles.

Even on Twitter, the company posted images proclaiming that the phone’s insides have been thoroughly sealed and held together and went as far as saying that the SIM tray too, is resistant from splashes (still no word on complete water resistance, just sayin’).

Stereo speakers

Speaking of upping the ante, Xiaomi has tampered with the speaker front, too, deciding to install two stereo speakers at the phone’s top and bottom entrusted with the job of providing an immersive stereo effect.

The reason behind the move, in the company’s own words, is to provide the users with an innate stereo experience while playing games or watching videos.

The 3.5mm audio jack has also been done away with, but that’s a tale for some other time and place (Cupertino, maybe?).
