Moto G5 Plus vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Comparison: The Battle Of Mid-Range Titans

This year has already seen some quality smartphones come out from top brands. Most notable amongst them are Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 (which has very quickly generated large scale interest) and the Moto G5 Plus (which was launched yesterday, and is being expected to have a similar impact).

Both pretty much cater to the same segment of the market (counting in the biggest variant of the Note 4, in this case) and hence have put the people in a quandary as to which one’s better and worth lightening their wallets for.

Feeding to the crux of the matter, here’s what the duo offers, in a nutshell:

Facing a catch-22 situation ourselves, we decided to take the bull by the horns, and here’s what we found when we pitted them against one another:

Design and Display

Both the phones are much similar when its comes to the innards but are poles apart as far as the aesthetics are concerned. More on that later.

Let’s start with the display first. Both the Redmi Note 4 and Moto G5 Plus come with full HD display. However, the Redmi Note 4 comes with a 5.5-inch display as compared to the G5 Plus’ 5.2-inch one, and also has a higher screen-to-body ratio (72.7%) to the latter 67.1%).

The G5 Plus fares just a bit better, largely thanks to its IPS-NEO display offering a 424ppi pixel density. The Note 4, on the other hand, has a pixel density of 401ppi to offer.

Clearly, both the phones have been designed keeping in mind the segment of the market they are catering to, which shows up evidently.

The two have an average design, covered almost entirely by metal with a dash of plastic thrown in, in between. All in all, the design(s) of the phones can be considered to be on par with each other.

However, if we were to be a little opinionated, we’d put this one in favor of the Redmi Note 4 (your view could differ though).

Performance

The way a phone functions is one of the integral parts of its assessment, for we have seen even the mightiest of smartphones falter at this stage.

Although, in this context, it gets way more complicated and difficult as both the G5 Plus and the Redmi Note 4 are quite decent performers, and run equally well, with hardly any glitches.

They have the same processor makeup (and the GPU, too) as well, making it all the more tedious for us to draw a line and pinpoint the difference.

The octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset works well for both of them, thereby rendering an identical, cool performance.

The G5 Plus, featuring a much lighter stock Android, takes the cake here as a heavier MIUI doesn’t quite work for us.

Camera and Battery

Those in the know-how of the Moto G4 Plus could very well validate how effective its camera was, with some even calling it the best smartphone last year in terms of optics.

The G5 Plus does not disappoint either, with its 12MP primary camera (with the same AF tech as Samsung’s Galaxy S7) coming in with features like f/1.7 aperture, dual-LED flash and 1080p video recording capabilities in this part of the world. The 5MP one on the front (f/2.2 aperture) works fine too.

The Redmi Note 4, on the other hand, can be termed as a perfectly average outing by Xiaomi, optically. The 13MP rear camera and the 5MP selfie snapper (both with f/2.0 aperture) do a good job indeed but stumble visibly in low lighting conditions.

Battery is one aspect where the Redmi Note 4 upstages the G5 Plus by a wide margin.

Supported by a mammoth 4,100mAh Li-Po power unit, the phone can be kept up running for as many as two days easily and does full justice to its ‘Power has a new look’ tagline. Alas, there is no provision for fast charging.

The Moto G5 Plus pales in this comparison. There is a 3,000mAh Li-Ion battery to keep things alive, but it takes its time (120 minutes, to be precise) to charge the phone from its zero to its maximum capacity.

There are claims of TurboCharging capabilities though, but the phone falls a bit flat on this front.

Final Verdict

Safe to say, the phones are like two peas in a pod. It’s just a thin line that separates the two and may affect you decision making abilities.

If you’re looking for a nicely performing smartphone that has more than excellent optical capacity, you may as well order the Moto G5 Plus right now.

But if you are on the lookout for a sturdy option that would let you multi-task easily without leeching off the battery, and can run ‘charge-less’ for at least a day and a half (with average usage, of course), the Redmi Note 4 is your best bet.
