Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has added a new feature to its iPhone app. Dubbed the Picture-in-Picture (PiP), the feature triggers when you are on a video call where the screen minimizes allowing users to access other apps without interrupting the video call in progress.

WhatsApp on iOS Gets Picture-in-Picture Support

According to the release notes for WhatsApp iOS v23.3.77, the app lets users minimize the screen when on a video call. The PiP mode was under testing since December last year available for Beta users only. Cut to now, the v23.3.77 available via App Store lets users enjoy PiP mode to the fullest.

WhatsApp on iOS is now getting picture-in-picture mode

WhatsApp on Android already has a feature where you can minimize the video call screen without disconnecting the video feed to the recipient. The feature works similarly to Apple’s FaceTime but on WhatsApp so that users can access other apps without any hassle.

When the PiP is triggered, you will get a floating screen with the video feed that you can drag anywhere on the screen. The feature is still rolling out which means if you haven’t received it yet, you will have to wait for some time as the feature should arrive for all iOS users in the coming weeks. You will need iOS 12.0 or later to get access.

WhatsApp v23.3.77 release note does give a pointer on other improvements made on the app. For instance, you can add captions when sending documents (again, this feature has been available on Android already). There’s support for large group subjects and descriptions in case you need them. Finally, there are personalized avatars that you can create via Settings >> Avatar and add as your DP.
