Vivo is widening its Y-Series line-up in India by adding Vivo Y100 5G to the catalog. Vivo Y100 is the first Y Series smartphone that has been priced above Rs. 20,000 as it claims to be loaded with top-quality specs. It is the first 5G phone in Vivo Y Series which also comes with color changing design for the back panel. Vivo first introduced a color-changing smartphone in 2022 and the brand aims to do better with Vivo Y100. It runs MediaTek Dimensity 900, features a 64MP camera, and runs Android 13 as well, but will this new offering by Vivo be able to make its mark in the highly competitive market? Let’s find out.

Vivo Y100 5G: Design

Vivo is one such brand that always uses the design of its smartphones as one of its main attractions and the same has been continued with Y100 as well. Vivo Y100 comes with a beautiful color-changing design for the back panel. It comes in 3 colors-metal black, pacific blue, and twilight gold all 3 of which claim to change color completely when exposed to UV Rays. I received the Pacific blue variant and when I unboxed it, the basic color of the model looked nice.

The device caught attention from afar as the finish of the back panel is different for the camera module part and different for the rest of the backside. However, the real magic is visible when light falls on it, the smartphone has a complete makeover as it changes its color to a totally different shade of Aqua Blue which looks equally gorgeous. Vivo has surely worked hard to improve its color-changing capability as the results are visible and they are good. The smartphone is made of glass and that makes it stand out among all its competitors made of plastic.

The top part of the back panel has two huge circular rings which house 3 camera lenses and an LED flash. The back panel has OIS text engraved and the bottom side has Vivo branding as well. The back panel is smooth to the touch but has a slightly more matte finish for the part where Vivo branding has been done. The circular rings are placed on a glossy and very slippery kind of surface that also catches fingerprints more.

Otherwise, Vivo has maintained its traditional design language. The front has a waterdrop notch for a selfie camera and sizeable bezels around the display. The right edge has a power button as well as volume rockers while the left edge is left vacant. The bottom edge houses a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and speaker grille while the SIM/MicroSD card tray has been placed at the top edge.

The Vivo Y100 device has a good in-hand feel and can be easily operated with one hand. It weighs 181 grams and has a sleek design with 7.73mm thickness, so the phone never feels bulky or difficult to hold. All in all, I was quite happy with the design of Vivo Y100 as it literally screams- Flaunt your Style.

Vivo Y100 5G Review: Display & Sound

The Vivo Y100 sports a 6.38-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. Although the size of the display is decent, thick bezels make it look slightly shorter when videos are played on it. However, if we talk about the picture quality, it is good. The colors are rich, the details visible and the blacks look deep and impactful. It has a refresh rate of 90Hz which is less as most devices have 120Hz refresh rates these days. The difference can be felt while scrolling as the text is not as smooth as on a 120Hz device. Although the touch sensitivity is good, brightness levels are just about ok as the screen is not very clearly visible under direct sunlight. Clearly, the display isn’t the most strongest suit of the vivo Y100.

Vivo Y100 5G Review: Camera

The Vivo Y100 smartphone has a triple camera setup at the back. It includes a 64MP main camera along with two 2MP lenses. The main camera performs well in daylight as it takes detailed and rich shots, with good color accuracy and sharpness. OIS does its job well as the images are Instagram-worthy as they are clicked. I didn’t need to apply filters to beautify them. The low-light performance is ok as well. Here are some camera samples, more will follow soon.

However, if we talk about the 2MP lenses, they hardly serve any purpose. Close-up shots can be taken via 2MP lenses but there is no autofocus. The images are not very detailed and even in good light, the images don’t show much character.

The camera also comes with features like panorama, live photo, slow-mo, time-lapse, pro, double exposure, and dual view.

Talking about the 16MP selfie lens, it has had a good performance so far.  I haven’t used a selfie camera much but whatever 1-2 pictures I clicked came out to be good. In daylight, the subject was well exposed, and the skin tone looked quite natural. The details were not lost and the background was blurred to keep the focus on the person in the frame.

Vivo Y100 5G Review: Performance

Vivo Y100 is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset that is fast as well as efficient. The 6nm chipset allows a multitude of apps to open and load quickly and there are no lags when switching between different running apps. There is 8GB RAM and it did its part well as even 15-20 apps ran in the background smoothly without any slowing down or crashing. Various benchmark tests were performed on Vivo Y100 and the results are given below-

The smartphone runs FunTouch OS 13 based on Android 13 and although the UI is user-friendly, colorful, and good-looking, there’s loads of pre-installed bloatware. Apps like Moj, Snapchat, Dailyhunt, Byjus, share chat, Josh, and Netflix are already loaded and you will have to remove those which you don’t want. For a device that costs above 20,000, bloatware should have been minimized.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi, GPS, OTG, USB Type-C, and more, and the device is 5G capable. This is where it will earn more brownie points as many might prefer spending 25k on a 5G smartphone. It comes with a good quality speaker that supports Hi-Res audio and Dolby Atmos and the calling experience is decent as well.

Vivo Y100 5G Review: Battery

Vivo Y100 packs a 4500mAh battery under the hood. The battery lasts an entire day with moderate usage but drains out faster when long gaming sessions or content consumption sessions are done on the device. It comes with 44W Flash fast charging that charges the device from 0 to 100% in just under an hour which is good. The battery could have been bumped up to 5000mAh for sure, which is pretty standard nowadays.

Vivo Y100 5G Review Verdict: Should you buy it?

The Vivo Y100 is an out-and-out mid-ranger that falls in the 25k price segment in the country. It comes with fast SoC, a good 64MP camera lens, and a stunning color-changing design, but has its own share of niggles as well. The smartphone has bloatware, comparatively lower peak brightness levels for the display, and a 4500mAh battery. However, if you want a device that falls in your under 30,000 budget, has decent performance, and shows off your stylish personality, then Vivo Y100 can be your choice.
