Motorola Edge 30 Review: Design

Considering that the name of the smartphone has ‘Edge’ in it, Motorola has not introduced anything edgy in the design factor of this latest smartphone. The Motorola Edge 30 has a very basic design and comes in 2 colorways. I received Meteor Grey variant for review purposes and the device looks decent from the back. Curved at the edges, the back panel has a matte finish. The device is not one of those which can make heads turn.

Moto Edge 30 rear panel

The back panel houses a triple camera module at the top which has a glossy look and the triple lenses are slightly protruding which affects the balance of the device on a flat surface. There is a Motorola symbol and branding, both in silver-grey font too on the back panel.

Moto Edge 30 review - front design

The Motorola Edge 30 has a boxy design but the build quality is good. The smartphone is 6.79mm thick making it the world’s slimmest smartphone and it weighs mere 155 grams. Its lightweight and super sleek body make it comfortable to hold and it can be easily operated by one hand.

The only problem with the design of the Motorola Edge 30 (Apart from it being very basic) is that the back panel attracts lots of smudges and fingerprints. Even the camera module attracts smudges and dust easily which doesn’t look nice many a time.

Motorola Edge 30 Review: Display

The Motorola Edge 30 sports a 6.5-inch 10-bit pOLED display panel. The size of the display is big and the visuals look clear and beautiful on it. The colors look a little brightened because the saturated mode is on by default. If you are someone who prefers natural color tones, then you can switch this mode off. The colors in natural mode sometimes look a little subdued or faded which could have been rectified.

Moto Edge 30 review - display

The display has a 144Hz refresh rate which is higher than the usual 90/120Hz that is found in most smartphones. The difference can be felt as the scrolling is smoother and gaming to looks better than many others. You can adjust the refresh rate between 60Hz, 144Hz, or Auto and though there is no difference in touch response, the 144Hz refresh rate leads to increased battery consumption. 360Hz touch sampling rate provides swift touch responses and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection safeguards the device from scratches. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner which also works well.

The display menu in the settings app can be used to adjust the brightness level, screen timeout time, theme, font size, display size, display refresh rate, attentive display, and more. The shape of the app icons can be changed as well from the display menu. There are 3-4 options of shapes to choose from. 500 nits peak brightness gave good screen visibility under direct sunlight.

Motorola Edge 30 Review: Battery

Now, coming to battery life, it’s one area where Motorola Edge 30 lags far behind. In today’s day and age, when smartphones offer up to 6000mAh batteries, Edge 30 packs a mere 4020mAh battery. Though this might have been done to keep the phone lightweight, still it’s a glaring drawback. With a refresh rate as high as 144Hz and a battery capacity of 4020mAh, one can’t get very good battery life.

The Edge 30 gives around a day’s battery life if you have very light usage and around 4-5 hours of backup if you have moderate usage including social media, calling, messaging, and internet surfing.

Motorola Edge 30 Review: Camera

The Motorola Edge 30 has a triple camera setup at the back which includes a 50MP main sensor, 50MP ultrawide sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. There is also a 32MP selfie camera at the front.

Moto Edge 30 camera app review

The Camera UI is simple and loaded with options for better photography. Edge 30 has modes like cinemagraph, panorama, group selfie, ultra-res, dual capture, pro, portrait, slow-mo, and more. Photos can be captured by tapping anywhere or on the shutter. There is a leveler which makes sure objects in the photo are clicked straight.

Moto Edge 30 camera setting

Talking about camera quality, the 50MP main sensor gives good images in daylight. The images are bright and sharp. The colors look accurate too. The greens, blacks, yellows, and browns look beautiful and natural. The hues of the setting sun in the sky looked gorgeous. In photos where there was light and darkness both, the clicks highlighted both their details well.

What I loved about the main camera is its night mode. While many smartphones’ night modes give grainy and distorted photographs, Edge 30’s night mode gave clear and detailed photos even during the nighttime. The colors didn’t look like they were brightened and the lights also did not disperse to make the click look faded. The shadows on the walls were clear and looked aesthetic even in a simple shot. Check out some samples here and see how the full moon looked pleasing via this lens.

The 50MP ultrawide camera gives good photos in natural light and night light both. Though detailing is slightly less around the edges in nighttime photos, I guess it can be ignored as the overall quality of the images is decent.

Coming to the last 2MP depth sensor, it gives strictly average photos and is the weakest link in the Edge 30s’ camera setup. Hope smartphone brands either stop including these 2MP lenses to make it a triple camera setup or give something that is substantially useful. Meanwhile, check out some shots taken from the depth sensor here.

The Motorola Edge 30 has a 32MP selfie camera which is way better than the selfie lenses found in many other devices in this price range. The selfies clicked are clear, precise, and full of details. The focus is kept on the subject/subjects and the skin tones come out to be natural. Check out some selfies below.

Motorola Edge 30 Review: Performance

The Moto Edge 30 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G chipset. The processor is fast and combined with up to 8GB RAM, it performs well. From loading and opening apps, calling, browsing, playing games, and browsing social media, the smartphone handles everything you throw at the phone with ease. There are no lags and the apps run smoothly in the background without crashing or getting unresponsive.

In terms of gaming, Edge 30 performs decently. From games like subway surfers to Alto’s Adventure, and battle royale shooter BGMI to Call of Duty, it can provide you impressive gaming experience at high graphics and frame rates. The touch controls are super responsive and this makes the gaming experience smoother.

Moto Edge 30 runs Android 12 with Moto’s My UX customizations and personalization features. It is a Google Pixel-like UI that is clean and devoid of any bloatware. There are very few pre-installed apps that can be uninstalled easily. The UI is easy to use and looks colorful and fun. Motorola has promised Android 13 and Android 14 updates for the Edge 30 with 3 years of security updates.

Moto Edge 30 review - software

The smartphone supports gestures, one-hand mode, and much more. Video calling gets better with effects like blurring the background, audio zoom, and subject tracking. Modes like Bedtime and Focus allow you to sleep/work undisturbed from the messages and calls that are unimportant.

For audio, Edge 30 has two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The sound is loud and clear but when you listen to songs, there is no depth in the audio. 5G connectivity is enabled as it has support for 13 5G bands and WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2 are also enabled ensuring wider connectivity options.

Motorola Edge 30 Review Verdict: Should you buy it?

Motorola Edge 30 is the lightest and slimmest smartphone in the market that comes with a Snapdragon 778G+ chipset, a good display, and a clean UI. It has a decent camera setup as well but it is no match to the cameras found in Oppo F21 Pro 5G which falls in the same price range. The battery is weak and the sound quality is not satisfactory which makes this basic-looking smartphone fall even lower on one’s priority list. All in all, Moto Edge 30 will attract those who want a slim and light 5G device for the under 30k price range. Otherwise, it is bound to face tough competition from smartphones like Oppo F21 Pro 5G (review), Realme 9 Pro+ (review), and Vivo T1 Pro (review).
