After fingerprint readers, the dual cameras qualify as a hardware innovation that has caught on and is increasingly becoming smartphone staple. We have seen all sorts of implementations of that extra shooter on the rear and even on the front, but now, Vivo is pushing the envelope further by adding both – dual rear and dual front cameras – on the upcoming X9 and X9 Plus smartphones.

A recent teaser from the Chinese manufacturer confirms this excess and even lists the resolution of sensors being used. The X9 and X9 Plus each will have a 20MP + 8MP front cameras at their disposal.

While we are all overly familiar with dual rear cameras at this point of time, this isn’t the first phone with a dual front camera either. The Lenovo Vibe S1 that launched last year has the honors. The S1 incorporated an extra sensor for depth sensing. Since it could differentiate between the object in foreground and background, the software facilitated clicking selfies and then clipping and pasting yourself in a popular setting from around the globe.

The secondary front sensor on Vivo X9 and X9 Plus has 8MP resolution, which is more than what we usually see for mere depth sensors. Perhaps it will help with ultra wide angle selfies (same as the rear camera of LG G5).

A Huawei like implementation, where the secondary monochrome sensor is used for gathering more light, would have made more sense and might have even resolved the perennial low light problem with selfies.

Whether or not this dual camera setup in Vivo X9 and X9 Plus makes a difference to your photography experience, it definitely makes for an influential marketing stunt.

Other notable rumored specs include Snapdragon 653 chipset, 4GB/6GB RAM and internal storage up to 64GB.
