TL; DR

  • The Snapdragon 8 Elite supports 8 years of updates, according to Christopher Patrick, SVP and GM at Qualcomm.
  • It’s up to the OEMs to take advantage of this and promise the consumers 8 years of updates for their devices.

While everyone’s busy talking about the performance and efficiency improvements of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, there’s a small detail that you probably missed. According to Christopher Patrick, SVP and GM at Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Elite will support 8 years of updates. Yes, you read that right—8 years.

Qualcomm is exploring ways to enable manufacturers to provide such extended support. If a brand decides to implement 8 years of updates, it is technically feasible, with Qualcomm’s chipset infrastructure supporting this prolonged coverage.

Until recently, Apple’s had the upper hand when it came to updates, often keeping iPhones up to date for 5 to 6 years. Samsung and Google caught up to this with 7 years of software support.

Now, Qualcomm’s new initiative aims to take things even further and also make it easy for OEMs to support devices for up to 8 years. We’ve finally come to a stage where Android phones not only match but actually beat Apple at its own game (one of its biggest strengths).

8 years of updates soon?

The Galaxy S25 series could be the first to debut with an 8-year update promise. Meanwhile, Pixel devices are always at the forefront of software updates, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Google jumped on board with the Pixel 10 series.

Here’s the thing—while Samsung and Google are already upping their update game, others are not doing much. Motorola, for instance, just recently started giving 5 years of support on some budget devices. But to go from 2 to 4 years to a whopping 8? That’s a big ask.

Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus are likely watching this space closely, but it’s going to take some serious commitment for them to deliver that kind of longevity. Qualcomm may be showing the way, but it’s up to these manufacturers to actually follow through.

A big win for us, the users

At the end of the day, it’s a win for everyone tired of upgrading their phone every few years just to stay secure or enjoy the latest software features. Most new features nowadays are software-based, anyway. 8 years could be a stretch though, but let’s see how this move turns out in the future.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…

Before we get too excited, let’s remember that promising updates and delivering them on time are two very different things. The Android world is known for its fragmented updates, and it’s going to take a lot of work for manufacturers to actually push out regular updates for 8 whole years.
