It’s been close to three years since its precursor had debuted, and finally, Sony has taken the veil off its flagship TWS offering — the Sony WF-1000XM4. In the months and weeks leading to the launch, we had got a good idea about the XM4s through leaks and rumors. We had learned how significant this year’s design change is along with some much-needed spec-bump.

So now that the product is official, let’s take a look at the complete repertoire —

Sony WF-1000XM4 Features

Let’s start with the design, which is more compact this time around. Both the case (40%) and the buds (10%) are smaller in size. The latter is much more rounded in shape. And the case measurements are 2.4 inches wide and 1.3 inches tall. Sony is releasing the newcomer in two paints viz. White and Light Gray. The buttons get a golden accent.

Internally, the buds have gotten upgraded to Bluetooth 5.2 (isochronous connectivity) with support for Hi-Res Audio (w/ LDAC) from 6mm drivers, DSEE Extreme compression algorithm, 360 Reality Audio support, and multi-option EQ settings. These can fastly pair with Android and Windows devices. There is no multi-point support though.

The buds are also armed with “the industry’s highest level of noise-canceling yet,” from Sony’s V1 processor. There is Adaptive Sound Control to adjust the noise cancelation levels to your requirement. The Ambient Sound feature lets you hear the surroundings when you need to. Sony has also carried forward the “Speak-to-Chat” option that automatically pauses earphone audio when it detects that you are speaking.

Additionally, the WF-1000XM4 is also IPX4 rated against sweat and splash resistance. The battery size also sees improvement as the quoted life is around 8 hours of ANC playback with 16 hours from the case. If you disable ANC, then the battery life will rise to 12 hours from the buds. This time, the case also supports Qi wireless charging.
