TL; DR
  • Electric Octavia concept previews future Skoda EV tech.
  • Concept uses VW Group’s new SSP architecture platform.
  • Production Octavia EV, vRS variant coming later.

Even the German automakers are not escaping the EV revolution. Skoda is now planning to showcase an Electric version of their iconic Octavia model. Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer recently confirmed that a concept version of the all-electric Octavia estate will be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show this September.

The Octavia EV won’t just be another electric model; it will give us a glimpse for Skoda’s future EV roadmap, as it is a major player for the entire Volkswagen Group. The big news here isn’t just the electric powertrain, but the underlying technology. Forget the current MEB platform.

New EV Platform

The Octavia EV concept will showcase the Group’s highly anticipated SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) architecture. This next-gen platform, still under development, promises significant leaps in performance and efficiency, according to Zellmer. This means potential EVs with longer ranges, faster charging, and a more engaging driving experience – a concoction necessary to win over consumers in the increasingly competitive EV market.

Zellmer was careful to label the Munich reveal a “test bed,” indicating that Skoda is keen to gauge public and media reaction to the concept’s design and technology.

While the production version of the Octavia EV isn’t expected until the end of the decade, it will be the first of a next generation wave, and will closely be followed by the Volkswagen ID. Golf, also built on the SSP platform.

More EVs in Pipeline

Before the Octavia EV arrives, Skoda is keeping busy. Two other electric models are slated for launch: the Epic crossover and a flagship 7-seater electric SUV, likely to be Skoda’s most expensive offering yet. Zellmer was quick to reassure that even this premium model would adhere to Skoda’s core values of “design functionality and value for money.”

And for performance enthusiasts, there’s good news: the sporty vRS badge will live on in the electric era. Zellmer confirmed a second electric vRS model is in development, following the Enyaq vRS.

The Octavia EV concept in Munich will be a key moment, not just for Skoda, but for the wider EV landscape and we are closely watching this unfold.
