Apple’s advancements in this form factor have garnered significant attention over the past year. A recent report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is not the only company pursuing this technology, as Meta and Samsung are also developing similar devices. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple aims to commence mass production of these new AirPods equipped with camera modules by 2026.
These innovative AirPods are anticipated to work in conjunction with the Vision Pro and future Apple headsets, enhancing the spatial audio experience and bolstering the spatial computing ecosystem. The infrared camera integrated into the AirPods will be capable of detecting changes in the surrounding environment, with Foxconn designated as the NPI supplier for the infrared camera components.

Meta is working on a feature that would enable users to examine an object and request the earbuds to analyze it. However, the company is currently encountering challenges related to the design of these Camera Buds, such as suboptimal lens angles and visibility concerns for individuals with long hair. The buds remain in the prototype stage and there is a possibility that the project could be abandoned altogether. Meta is reportedly collaborating with Luxottica Group to address these design challenges.
The company intends to incorporate a camera into the center of Oakley Sphaera-style frames, specifically the SuperNova 2 model designed for athletes, cyclists, and similar users, set for release in 2025. Additionally, a wristband-style controller and an updated version of the Orion smart glasses are currently being developed.
