Samsung smartphones and home appliances are what have known the company for (especially in India) but it is much more bigger than that. The South Korean conglomerate is a leader in DRAM and NAND chips manufacturing spaces.  It also has an established Exynos SoC line-up for smartphones. Now, if reports are to be believed, Samsung could start developing GPUs in-house for its smartphones.

As per the report from German site – WinFuture, Samsung with its in-house developed GPUs will be aiming to deliver flagship-level performance on budget smartphones. The same report suggests that company aims to control every aspect of GPU development including design and architecture.

Will Exynos chipsets get a new partner?

Samsung’s Exynos chipsets are what have been driving its smartphones launched in the recent years. However, so far Samsung had to rely on Mali GPUs (sourced from ARM) for graphics. If Samsung starts making its own GPUs, Samsung will be able to optimize in a way that it delivers optimum performance. With this move, Samsung will also heavily cut down its device cost and dependence on ARM.

The company eyeing the possible use of GPUs in future tech including autonomous cars. It is worth mentioning here is that its rival smartphone maker Apple has been using its own GPU in for more than a year now.

Samsung’s custom Mongoose cores have been part of its premier Exynos chips and which helped it to outperform contemporary Cortex-A cores. If the company manages to replicate something similar on the GPU front it will have a big advantage over its contemporaries especially in-house modems.
