July 2023 saw foldables being launched by two of the leading tech brands- Motorola and Samsung. While the month began with Moto launching Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, it ended with Samsung launching Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 at an Unpacked Event. This time, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with soft improvements, the biggest cover display, and a new hinge that allows for zero gaps when folded.

Other than that, Samsung also claims that the durability of the Flex hinge which was a matter of concern for the users has been improved. To test this claim, a Youtuber made Galaxy Z Flip 5 undergo a rigorous Fold Test and the results are surprising.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Vs Moto Razr 40 Ultra: Fold Test Results

The test results indicate that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is more durable than advertised. When the YouTuber put Galaxy Z Flip 5 to a fold test, it managed to last over 4,00,000 folds before seeing any damage on the hinge and display.

To prove how good this is, Moto Razr 40 Ultra was also put to a similar fold test and it could last merely 126,266-fold cycles. Polish YouTuber Mrkeybrd and his team did these tests during a livestream on their channel from the 2nd to the 9th of August. The livestream lasted for over 6 hours with the test running for more than a week.  It was called “The Great Folding Test Vol II” wherein Galaxy Z Flip 5 was pitted against Razr 40 Ultra to find out which foldable is more durable.

The test included people folding and unfolding each foldable as many times as it takes to break one. The results were clear as Galaxy Z Flip 5 survived 4,01,146 folds before it failed to stay open or closed. One more thing in favor of Flip 5 was that despite the damage to the hinge, display performance was unaffected.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 crossed 2.67,000 manual folds with ease as the hinge started to show damage after 2,23,000 folds. As a part of the test, the Z flip 5 reached 200,000 folds without any problems after which to test the endurance, it was folded under water for 30 minutes. Hinge was affected a little but it continued to be usable. After that, the foldable was folded in a high-temperature setting, on top of ice cubes, and even in sand. Flour, sugar eggs, and water were also dumped on the foldable. Yet the device managed to survive another 100,000 folds until it gave up as a pink line appeared on the display inside. The hinge worked but the foldable didn’t open completely.

In comparison, the performance of Razr 40 Ultra was far behind as it started showing problems as early as 43,000 folds and its hinge survived only 1,26,367 folds. Although the livestream is no longer available, Mrkeybrd has posted a summarized video explaining how things actually went down.

Samsung itself claimed that its Galaxy Z Flip 5 can withstand 2,00,000 folds, but the test numbers have surpassed what the brand claimed. This is a rarity in the tech world and thus one can say Samsung has really worked hard to make flip foldable more durable.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Water Test

The Youtuber also tested the water resistance level of the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The handset was submerged in water and covered in dust and mud as a part of the test. Since it comes with an IPX8 rating, it survived against water immersion, however, it didn’t perform well against dust.

At the end of the tests, both foldables were intact and looked like they are functioning normally. Mrkeyrd is planning to disassemble the foldables to see if there’s any damage inside. But for now, it is clear that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a tougher foldable with an extremely strong hinge.

While Moto Razr 40 Ultra has been up for sale for a while now, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 priced at Rs. 99,999 will go on sale today.
