Redmi Earbuds S are Xiaomi’s most affordable True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones in India. These buds are feature-loaded and aim to deliver tangle-free wireless convenience to young consumers at a modest price.

Redmi Earbuds S Review: Design, Fit, and Pairing

Xiaomi put great emphasis on the fit of these buds, and we can vouch for these claims. I am extremely picky when it comes to in-ear options, and the Redmi Earbuds S fit surprisingly well. These buds are light (4.1 grams) and sit snuggly & securely in my ears. They can also suitably block ambient noise without posing any inconvenience even when worn for hours at a stretch.

In case you are looking for a workout companion, you can rest assured that these won’t just fall off – and they are IPX4 splash and sweat resistant. Redmi Buds do not look or feel cheap and the compact charging case they come in is also of fairly good quality.

All is not well, though. The multifunction push-buttons on the buds that you’d need for gestures and functions like music playback controls aren’t particularly handy. I know, expecting touch gestures would be expecting too much in this price segment. But these buttons need to be softer. Pressing the multifunction button often hurt our ears and disturbed the position of the buds. Since these additional functions contribute a major part in the TWS Charm, this is a major peeve point.

Also, the charging port is the regular micro USB. If your phone has a Type-C port, you will need to carry a separate charging cable for the case.

Pairing is quite seamless. There is no button on the case – just flip it open, pull out the buds, and pair Redmi earbuds S manually (Google fast pair isn’t supported and a pairing card won’t pop-up). From the next time onwards, simply opening the case would do.

Redmi Earbuds S Review: Audio Quality and Performance

TWS buds are more about convenience than audio quality, but that doesn’t mean that this crucial aspect has been ignored. The sound stage is more focused on lower frequencies because that’s what most consumers buying in this price range prefer (we agree).

Bass boosted music does sound good. Overall audio quality is decent for the price and better than most other TWS buds we have tested in this price range. The best performance is when you keep the volume to around 75 percent. If you are very particular about audio quality, you could go for wired options.

The Redmi Buds S pair over Bluetooth 5.0. The connection was very stable and reliable during our testing. We didn’t experience any latency while gaming, but users can make use of low latency gaming mode that fires when you press the multifunction button thrice.

Redmi Earbuds S Review: Additional functions and Call quality

Additional functions work reliably on the Redmi Buds S but, as we talked about above in the design section, the pushbuttons make them a bit inconvenient to execute. The good part is that these gestures don’t trigger accidentally, which could be a huge annoyance particularly when you are using TWS buds while lying down in your bed.

Using multifunctional buttons, you can control music playback, manage incoming calls, and summon smart assistant on your phone. Here’s a list of things you could do:

1. Answer or end calls, answer second call – single press on the button

2. Switch between calls – double press during a call

2. Reject call – press and hold

3. Play/Pause Music – single press while listening to music

4. Trigger Google Assistant (or any other assistant) – double press

5. Switch between Earbuds and phone audio during a call –  press and hold the multi-function button

6. Mute/Unmute during calls – Double press

7. Enable/Disable Game Mode – triple press.

Call quality is above average when compared to other affordable TWS buds, but once again don’t expect them to outperform wired options. Unlike wired options, wireless buds do not have a dedicated inline microphone and the mic input on these buds has to be amplified, which makes it tricky to eliminate noise. Redmi Earbuds S still does a fine job with noise cancellation during calls, but call quality takes a hit in noisy environments.

Redmi Earbuds S Review: Battery

The charging case and buds together carry 12 hours of backup. The case can charge these buds thrice. We got around 3.5 hours of playback time on a single charge, which is quite decent. The case takes 1.5 hours to fully charge these buds.

Redmi Earbuds S Review: Should you buy them?

Redmi Earbuds S provides excellent value. Of course, some corners had to be cut to accommodate the budget price tag, but Xiaomi seems to have made all the right choices. If you know what you are getting into, you won’t be disappointed.

These buds provide excellent fit, have decent battery mileage, above-average audio quality, and offer reliable connectivity. On the downside, the pushbuttons are not very convenient.

If you are restricted by a budget of 2K and are looking for TWS experience, we can certainly recommend Redmi Earbuds S as an option.

Pros

  • Comfortable, secure Fit
  • Great battery mileage
  • Decent audio quality

Cons

  • Push buttons on buds are not very handy
  • No Type-C charging port
  • Only SBC codec supported
