Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF goes official

0

Qualcomm has quietly announced the Snapdragon X65 modem-RF. As the name suggests, this is a successor to last year’s X60 modem, which is part of Snapdragon 888 phones. The new solution is quoted to be much faster with speeds up to 10Gbps. The brand has also unveiled a bunch of other 5G products including the Snapdragon X62 5G modem, Qualcomm 545 mmWave module, and AI antenna tuning technology.

Let’s take a look at each of these one by one.

Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF features

Snapdragon X65 is based on a 4nm processing node and comes with concurrent carrier aggregation between all sub-6GHz and mmWave bands.

The new modem supports top download speeds of up to 10Gbps, which is an increase from 7.5Gbps on its predecessor. Now these numbers are elusive considering the current 5G limitations. Anyway, it is amazing nonetheless and will be useful in due course.

It enables dual-mode 5G, which means both standalone and non-standalone networks are supported. Further, it happens to be the first modem to incorporate 3GPP Release 16 specification. This allows for “5G phase 2” and the expansion to new services, spectrum, and deployments. What this means for you is faster, power-efficient, and reliable speeds.

Another interesting aspect of X65 modem is its upgradeable architecture that will receive newer software updates for a long life span.

“We are reaching a significant milestone with the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System, unleashing connectivity up to 10 Gigabits per second and support for the latest 5G specifications that will play a critical role in enabling new 5G use cases not only for redefined premium smartphone experiences but also opening a new realm of possibilities for 5G expansion across mobile broadband, compute, XR, industrial IoT, 5G private networks and fixed wireless access,” said Cristiano Amon, president and CEO-elect, Qualcomm Inc.

Next up we have the Snapdragon X62, which as you’d guess a trimmed down variant of the X65 and clocks a max downlink speed of 4.4 Gbps. Rest, as you can see in the above illustration, they share the other feature set.

Qualcomm is expected to roll out devices featuring the X65 and X62 modems this year, probably late 2021.

Before you switch to another article, here, take a look at the other goodies Qualcomm launched today:

  • Qualcomm QTM545, it’s 4th-gen mmWave antenna with higher transmit power and larger mmWave coverage.
  • QE7100 Wideband Envelop Tracker, which is 30-percent more energy-efficient than alternative while sporting full 100Hz bandwidth for both 5G and 4G LTE bands.
  • Qualcomm AI-Enhanced Signal Boost technology which is claimed to be 30 percent smarter at detecting the way you hold the phone and accordingly enhance the antennas for better and efficient coverage.
  • Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform Gen 2 for mobile operators who will be able to utlize the 5G infrastructure including the newly launched X65 modem, Qualcomm 547b mmWave module, sub-6GHz network, and 8 receive antennas to transmit fixed broadband connection up to 10 Gbps download speeds. This is said to hit the market in H1 2022.
