Now that OnePlus has become a part of the Oppo family, the two companies have decided to consolidate the code for their Android-based operating systems. Following this announcement, Oneplus has unveiled the Oxygen OS 12 update, which is based on Android 12 with some features from Oppo’s ColorOS in tight integration. Oneplus is releasing the first open beta of OxygenOS 12 to the Oneplus 9 and Oneplus 9 Pro for now, while the older models will have to wait for this update. Once this version is passed as stable, Oneplus will start rolling out its updates to earlier smartphones too.

The new OxygenOS 12 has new look and features like reduced information density and bolder text to make the menus easily readable. Other changes include those in-app icons and indicators like clock data, Wi-Fi, and more.

OxygenOS 12 Release Date

The beta version of OxygenOS 12 is live now on Oneplus 9 and Oneplus 9 Pro. The update is expected to be available on Oneplus 9RT too when it launches later this month.

Oneplus OxygenOS 12 New features

1. Customisable Dark Mode

OxygenOS 12 has a Dark Mode customization option which allows users to decide how dark they want the dark mode to be. This is a borrow from ColorOS and is expected to enhance the usability for those who may not prefer the dark mode to be completely black. OxygenOS 12 will allow you to choose between 3 Dark Modes- Gentle, Medium and Enhance with the intensity of the dark background increasing with each mode.

2. Brand New Shelf

Earlier versions of OxygenOS might have ignored this feature, but it is finally coming to life in OxygenOS 12. Oneplus has redesigned it with a card layout with widgets for weather, step counter, data, storage, and more.

3. Private Safe to keep things a secret

This one’s an interesting addition to OxygenOS 12. It allows you to hide sensitive photos, videos, and documents behind a password. The data that is stored in the Private Safe is separated from other apps while remaining personally accessible. Personal files like photos, videos, audio, and documents can be kept safely stored here.

4. Work-Life Balance Goes Global

The Work-Life Balance feature will now be available in Global markets. It allows you to easily switch between Work and Personal profiles, with customized notification and app access. There is a feature that allows you to switch profiles as soon as your phone connects to a specific Wi-Fi network.

5. Canvas AOD 2.0

Canvas Always-on-Display was an interesting feature in OxygenOS 11 and Oneplus is taking it forward in OxygenOS 12 by making it even more customizable. There are a few brushed line elements you can add to make your smartphone look like a work-in-progress canvas when it is locked. The app lets you create a wireframe image on your lock screen, based on your wallpaper with more brushes, lines, photos, and effects to support your artistic vision.

6. Oneplus Scout

You can search for anything on your phone using Oneplus Scout, which is a part of Oneplus Shelf.

7. Note App

This app now lets you doodle as well as type out your thoughts as you think them.

Other new features of the OxygenOS 12 will be updated as and when we get to know more about them.
