Oppo Reno8 T 5G Hands-on: First Impression

2

OPPO Reno8 T has been officially announced in India. It was in the news for over a month, with several leak masters claiming it to be a 4G phone. Most of them turned out wrong, as the device that just landed in India supports 5G. Since it’s a Reno series phone, it gets slim and stylish packaging, a Snapdragon processor, and a SuperVOOC charging system.

Just before the launch, the phone landed at our doorstep for review. We unboxed the phone and played with it for a few minutes based on that experience here are my initial thoughts on the phone.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: Design

Oppo has chosen a completely different design language for Oppo Reno8 T, as it looks nothing like the other Oppo Reno 8 devices. The back panel of the Oppo Reno8 T has an Oppo Glow design which gives different hues under sunlight. Oppo has made the back cover with millions of pyramid-shaped crystals that are etched at a microscopic level to give the Glow design a new form factor. One of the best parts of the rear panel on the Oppo Reno8 T is that it is smudge and fingerprint-proof, even if you have the light-colored variant, no fingerprint marks will be visible on the back panel.

The rear panel has an oval camera module at the top left corner that contains 2 huge cutouts- a wide-angle camera for primary photos and an ultra-wide camera lens and the other housing ultrawide and portrait sensors along with LED flash. The camera module is slightly protruded and is placed inside a decorative strip with rounded ends. There is Oppo branding at the bottom. The device sure catches the eye when looked at from a distance and is sleek (7.7mm) and lightweight (171 grams) to hold.

The device comes in Sunrise Gold and Midnight Black colors and I received the Sunrise Gold variant for review purposes. It looked and felt good in hand due to its stylish looks and lightweight design.

The edges of the device are round and metallic in appearance. The right edge has a power button, while the left edge has volume rockers. The bottom has a SIM tray, USB Type-C port, and speaker grille. All in all, Oppo Reno 8T does stand out when it comes to the Looks part.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: Display

The Oppo Reno8 T 5G has a 6.7-inch curved Dragontrail Star2 AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution, 93% screen-to-body ratio, and 16.7 million colors. Content consumption on this display was smooth during whatever minimal use I had.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: Camera

The Oppo Reno 8T 5G comes with a triple camera setup at the back. It has a 108MP main camera, a 2MP depth camera, and a 40x microlens camera. The camera app is user-friendly and easy to use with practically no complicated features. There are modes like night, portrait, video, photo pro, Extra HD, Slo-Mo, Panorama, dual view video, and more. There is a 32MP selfie lens as well.

Though I haven’t had a chance to fully explore the camera setup, I took some random shots which looked decent. Selfies too were detailed and crisp.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: Performance

The Oppo Reno 8T is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. There is a micro SD card slot for expandable storage of up to 1TB. The processor makes the device fast and efficient. The apps load and open quickly and there are no lags or stutters even when you switch between apps.

It runs Android 13-based ColorOS 13 which comes with various customizations and options to personalize your experience. It has an always-on display that works well privacy features like auto deletion of clipboard activity after a short while, private safe, and more. The smartphone doesn’t have ads but comes pre-loaded with bloatware like Spotify, Netflix, Share Chat, Flipkart, LinkedIn, and more. A device with a price point of above 30k with this much bloatware is sure to be a turn-off for some. The Oppo Reno 8T 5G comes with stereo and it is a 5G device so it is future-ready as well.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: Battery

The Oppo Reno 8T 5G packs a 4800mAh battery with 67W SuperVOOC charging. The battery lasts for an entire day with moderate usage, but when used heavily, it drains out faster and has to be replenished before the day ends. 67W charger charges 0 to 100% in about 50 minutes which is pretty decent but there is no wireless charging available. Battery capacity could have been kept at least 5000mAh as even budget devices get a large battery these days. Oppo has worked on improving Battery engine health doubling the charging cycles from 800 10 1600 cycles.

Oppo Reno8 T 5G: What we think so far

The Oppo Reno8 T 5G looks good, feels good, and comes with premium specs. From whatever experience, I have had so far, the device is decent for those who want an attractive device at an under 40k price point. It has 5G connectivity, fast charging, and a 108MP camera, which makes it tick many boxes.

Stay tuned to this space for a detailed review of the Oppo Reno8 T 5G.
