OPPO A9 that recently launched in India is a very well balanced mid-range phone available to both online and offline buyers. It’s loaded to the brim with cutting edge technology all housed in a trendy casing and comes at a very reasonable starting price of Rs. 15,490.

But how does it fare against the latest competition? Well, in India, the A9 will primarily be up against the Vivo Y17 and Samsung Galaxy A30. Let’s compare the three phones to help you decide the best option for your specific needs.

Design and Display

All of these three phones have glass finish and offer full-view displays by accommodating the front camera in the screen. But that’s where the similarities end.

What makes OPPO A9 stand out are the thoroughly appealing gradient color options – Marble Green and  Fluorite Purple. The A9 also positions all components and branding symmetrically at the center, making it appear more harmonious.

The Vivo Y17 and Galaxy A30 both resort to the new design trends but fail to make a lasting impression in practice.

What further works in OPPO A9’s favor is its gorgeous FHD+ display that’s perfectly sharp and delivers punchy colors. The good quality display from OPPO can match up to AMOLED display on the Galaxy A30, and has the advantage of being lighter on eyes. The Vivo Y17, in comparison, has only HD+ resolution for the large-size canvas, and resultantly the text and images appear soft.

Performance and Software

The OPPO A9 is powered by MediaTek’s powerful Helio P70 octa-core chipset that’s duly assisted by 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The ColorOS software running on the handset is further optimized for all major gaming engines and integrates features like Hyperboost, Game assistant, and Game Space to further enhance the gaming experience for end-users.

The Helio P35 octa-core chipset on the Vivo Y17 and the Exynos 7904 SoC powering the Galaxy A30 aren’t even close when it comes to raw processing power.

All of the three phones have 4GB RAM and support microSD storage expansion. The Vivo Y17 also offers 128GB onboard storage, but the Galaxy A30 is limited at 64GB internal storage.

Long story short, the overall performance is noticeably better on the OPPO A9. So, if you are into mobile gaming or prioritize performance in general, the OPPO A9 should be your best bet.

On the software front, the Vivo Y17 brandishes Funtouch OS, which isn’t strictly in line with the taste of Indian consumers but gets the job done. Samsung’s One UI is relatively better designed, but it too pales in comparison with the feature-rich and extremely intuitive ColorOS 6.0. OPPO’s software is pleasant, simple to navigate, and gives consumers options to effortlessly tune the interface to their individual taste.

Camera and Battery

The OPPO A9 has a 16MP primary camera with wide f11.8 aperture. There’s also a secondary depth sensor that helps distinguish objects in the foreground from those in the background, thus enhancing the quality of portrait shots. The A9 also has a 16MP AI selfie camera on the front.

The Vivo Y17 has triple cameras, but more doesn’t necessarily equate better. The primary camera that you’d be using most often has a 13MP sensor with narrow f/2.2 aperture. There’s also a depth sensor and a wide-angle camera to shoot landscapes. The handset has a 20MP front camera for selfies.

The Samsung Galaxy A30, on the other hand, has a 16MP rear camera paired with a depth sensor, and a 16MP front camera for selfies.

The camera hardware is similar on all three phones, but the image processing software makes all the difference. The OPPO A9 cameras are fueled by AI smarts that help reproduce clean images with vivid colors and wide dynamic range even in tricky lighting.

With adequate daylight, all three phones managed to capture great shots. But in low light and indoors, the OPPO A9 proved remarkably more efficient. The smart image processing software helps it with accurate metering and to reproduce more balanced images with great details. The A9 also has an excellent Night Mode that comes in really handy for shooting dark scenes.

All three phones have beefy battery capacities. The Vivo Y17 takes a lead with a 5000mAh power unit. Even with a difference in battery capacity, OPPO A9 delivers almost similar mileage, thanks to its more optimized software. The Galaxy A30 comes in third.

Verdict

The OPPO A9 is certainly one of the best phones available in its class and offers better features than Vivo Y17 and Galaxy A30, more importantly, the OPPO A9 offers a more refined experience.

The A9 has a beautiful, symmetrical design, offers excellent performance hardware, has ample 128GB onboard storage, runs an intuitive and friendly software, and delivers excellent battery mileage.

The OPPO A9 is available for purchase at all offline stores.
