Dual cameras have already run out of steam and most OEMs are now adding triple cameras to keep things exciting. HMD Global, that markets Nokia Brand globally, perceived the trend well ahead in advance and launched the Penta camera Nokia 9 PureView early this year. The handset is now being teased on Social Media handles in India, which confirms imminent India launch.

Nokia 9 PureView Penta Camera system follows a unique approach

The complex camera system on the Nokia 9 PureView is unique, and not just because of fact the phone excesses on camera sensors. Instead of making the camera more versatile by using a different lens on each sensor (Wide-angle, telephoto, etc.), HMD Global’s approach tries to combine the yield from different sensors for one perfect image.

We’d personally say that this makes more sense than the conventional approach of stacking different types of lenses as consumers tend to use the primary camera a lot more.

All 5 cameras have 12MP sensors and f/1.8 aperture, 28mm focal length for respective lenses. Two of these can map colors, and the three are monochrome. There’s also an additional ToF sensor (these are used for applications like depth mapping, AR, and face recognition).

With all those camera sensors, the Nokia 9 PureView can theoretically capture extremely wide dynamic range and accurately map the depth of subjects in the image frame.

But does the approach work?

Well, Nokia 9 PureView isn’t a new phone and it has been well tested by now. Most of the Nokia 9 PureView reviews show that the image quality still can’t beat the tier-1 flagships out there, certainly not in the Auto mode. Editing RAW files yields better results, but that’s not something relevant to average consumers.

And if the camera performance is underwhelming, there isn’t much to be excited about here. Having said that, we wouldn’t write it off just yet – not till we have had some first-hand experience.

Other than the camera system, the Nokia 9 PureView is a notch-less phone powered by last years Snapdragon 845. It’s water resistant, has an in-display sensor, and a modest 3320mAh battery. Find the full specs below.
