Nokia 8, 6 (2017), 5, 3 All Will Join Google’s Android One Project

HMB Global took the center-stage last night to announce as many as five new devices including Nokia 1, New Nokia 6, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco and KiOS enabled Nokia 8110 4G. Three out of the 5 phones –  new Nokia 6, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco – are part of Google’s Andriod One project.

Which implies that moving forward, Google will take care of software updates for these devices. This will result in timely software and security updates and two guaranteed operating system upgrade.

Later, HMD Global released a statement that all Nokia Android smartphones from Nokia 3 onwards will be joining the Android One program. This means Google will take control and roll out their future updates.

How much impact will this have on Nokia 6 (2017), Nokia 8, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 users? Not much. They will still get the assurance of next version update (Android P) and security patches for at least another two years. Nokia is yet to announce exact details of when this transition process will start.
