Moto G5 Plus Vs. Moto G4 Plus: What Really Changed?

The World officially caught the first glimpses of the Moto G5 Plus at the recently concluded MWC event in Barcelona. It succeeds the Moto G4 Plus which wasn’t exactly a critically acclaimed device but did good, thanks to its great camera hardware. So, what has really changed in the Moto G5 Plus in comparison to the Moto G4 Plus? Let’s find out.

In a side-by-side comparison, the Moto G4 Plus clearly looks outdated with its plastic exterior. The new G5 siblings flaunt an aluminum exterior which is more premium and sturdier than its predecessor. The circular rear camera setup with a flash appear to have taken some inspiration from the Moto Z camera. Like Moto G4, the new G5 features Moto dimple just underneath the camera module.

Lenovo has still persisted with 3.5mm jack,  positioned on the top, while a micrUSB port is placed at the bottom edge. Overall, the Moto G5 Plus occupies a lower footprint than Moto G4 at  144.3 x 73 x 9.5mm and also weighs almost 10 grams less. One major change that immediately noticeable is the multipurpose home button. Unlike Moto G4 plus’ standalone fingerprint sensor, the G5 Plus features a button that works as both fingerprint and navigation button.

Lenovo Moto G5 Plus Display Vs. Lenovo Moto G4 Plus Display

Well, the Lenovo Moto G4 and G4 plus both featured the same displays despite the clear difference in their internals. Last year Moto G family came with a 5.5-inch full HD IPS display which resulted in 401ppi pixel density. It further had a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection layer on top.

The Moto G5 Plus, on the other hand, sports a 5.2-inch Full HD display with a pixel density of 424ppi. It’s trimmed version also rocks a 1080p screen but it is only 5-inch small with 441ppi pixel density. Motorola hasn’t paid any heed to the new market trend of adding 2.5D glass on every phone and persisted with the conventional Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and splash resistance coating.

The Motorola Moto G4 and G4 Plus both featured a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset under their respective hoods.The last generation Moto G4 Phones were average performers but their performers took a further beating due to heating issues.

However, Lenovo has created a clear divide in Moto G5 and G5 plus this year. The Moto G5  is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset while the Moto G5 Plus uses a comparatively more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 on the phone. the smaller variant is offered with 2/3 GB of RAM and 16/32 GB of expandable storage. The Moto G5 Plus, on the other hand, features 2/4 GB of RAM and 16/64 GB of ROM with microSD card slot. Both versions of Moto G5 supports dual-SIM and 4G LTE.

The Snapdragon 625 is a tried and tested champion by now. It can be spotted in Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4, Zenfone 3 and Vivo V5 Plus. The power-efficient 14nm finFET process based chipset far better and more power efficient as compared to the Snapdragon 617. The Snapdragon 430 on the other hand, which powers Moto G5, is no mug either. It has proved its nerve in the likes of Redmi 3S Prime.

There is a 2800mAh battery on board, charged via Micro-USB as we mentioned previously, and compatible with the company’s Rapid Charger. As we also mentioned, there is a fingerprint sensor and 3.5mm headphone jack but no NFC.

The Motorola Moto G4 had a 3000mAh battery whereas its successor features a smaller 2800mAh battery. Similarly, Battery size in Moto G5 Plus and Moto G4 Plus both stands at 3000mAh.

Moto G5 Plus Camera vs. Moto G4 Plus Camera

The Moto G4 Plus is known for its impressive camera capabilities. Lenovo has further improved upon it. The newcomer comes sports a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual pixel autofocus, f/1.7 aperture, and dual-LED flash. The dual pixel autofocus will further give a boost to the camera’s ability to focus especially in the low light scenario. The Moto G4 Plus lacked with 4K recording capabilities which company has tried to address here. The Moto G5 Plus’ rear camera is also capable of recording 4K video.

The Moto G5 on the other hand only gets a standard 13-megapixel camera. Though for selfies, both have to rely on a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

Motorola Moto G5 Plus Software vs Moto G4 Plus Software

Both the Moto G5 and Motorola Moto G5 Plus comes running on Android Nougat with Moto Experience layered on top. Moto continues to offer a clean and minimal bloatware strategy of past. The phone offers an unadulterated Android experience similar to Moto G4 and G4 Plus.

Conclusion

The Motorola Moto G5 sees a number of improvements over it predecessor in terms of design and hardware. The camera has also improved. Overall, the evolution of Moto G-series seems to be on the right track. If Motorola manages to keep the price in check, this could form a great recommendation for anyone looking for a good mid-range camera phone.
