TL; DR
  • Even though an iPhone 17 prototype has completed the engineering validation test (EVT), there is still scope for changes.
  • It is still a key milestone for the iPhone 17 series, which is expected to be released in September 2025, as it indicates the finalization of hardware for at least one model in the iPhone 17 lineup.

The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to arrive sometime in September 2025. Months ahead of its official announcement, a DigiTimes report claims that Apple has completed engineering validation testing (EVT) for an iPhone 17 model. For those catching up, EVT refers to a phase in product development where prototypes are evaluated for hardware functionality.

However, it is not a one-step procedure; companies can conduct multiple rounds of EVT if the design requires any changes to the hardware. The primary goal is to ensure that a device has no engineering-related issues before it enters mass production, as it takes a lot more time and resources to rectify problems at the production stage.

Even though an iPhone 17 prototype has completed the engineering validation test (EVT), there is still scope for changes. Most recently, Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the company is contemplating equipping the baseline iPhone 17 with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The company can still make similar tweaks to the prototype before it finalizes everything.

The iPhone 17 Prototype Still Has To Go Through Other Tests

However, the report also mentions how the iPhone 17 prototypes have yet to pass the Design Validation Test (DVT) and the Production Validation Test (PVT) before they get the go-ahead for mass production.

Since iPhones typically go through multiple product development phases before entering mass production, it is a routine procedure the company performs every year.

However, it is still a key milestone for the iPhone 17 series, which is expected to be released in September 2025, as it indicates the finalization of hardware for at least one model in the iPhone 17 lineup.
